Admittedly I have not hiked very long/far with this as a kilt. It may rub my knees too much and I may switch to a lighter material.

Hiking is where he kilt shines. Add a pair of gaiters and its dry and breathable. Much more than even my gore-tex rain pants. Mine is just past the knees, so it swishes open as I walk. The larger size is great for so many other uses. (Like ground sheet, UQ splash guard, etc.)

I also use a kilt for lower body rain protection. For my "door mat" I use a USPS Priority Mail Tyvek Envelope slit down the long side.

A hanging, though, was something different. I got to thinking. We hadn’t never been to nothing just to have a good time. A hanging was special and we was all getting to go.

If you could get a custom or DIY poncho that doubles as a pack cover and spare HAMMOCK ...that would get my +1.
combine https://grandtrunk.com/shop/all-terrain-hybrid-shelter/ with the zpacks or HH poncho...then we have a winner

I started with a visqueen plastic sheet and last year bought some Tyvek, But I had to wash it about three times to make is softer. Later I learned that you could buy garment quality TyVek that was already soft. The reason I carry a ground sheet is I can be sure I'll have trees. I might need to use the hammock as a bevy bag and I want to protect the bottom. Given that my concern is sharp-ish, pointy-isn things, I wouldn't use an expensive piece of cuben fiber for that purpose.

I like some tyvek under my hammock. It provides a clean place to spread stuff out to repack it if need be or as a groundsheet should you be forced to go to ground for some reason. And washing it a few times makes it softer and less noisy.I carry mine wrapped up with the Walmart Blue pad which is a kneeling cushion for the most part.Tyvek is your friend.....

I have a new piece of Tyvek for a groundsheet. I see many have washed their's, can you tell me how long it will last or how many washings it can take before it deteriorates? Also, has anyone added grommets to the corners to stake it down?

I got a Kelty Salida 2 tent footprint yesterday at the REI garage sale. It was priced at $12 so I figured worth a test as a ground cover. It's got tie outs that could be secured with stakes, I've had my plastic sheet blow around a bit. It weighs 6.3 ounces. Dimensions about 78 long by 38 wide. I'm relatively new to hanging but have had some issues dragging debris into my hammock.

I like using a ground sheet, but having one isn't a major priority for me. I guess it depends on how much space is in your pack and how heavy your load is. If you've got the space and don't mind the extra weight, it might be worth bringing along and experimenting with.
