I reluctantly have to bow out, ice storm got us and power has been out since6 this morning..currently camping in the house...wife still won't let me drill hooks in the living room to hang my roan...and I got busted wearing my overshoes on a hardwood floor.. Hope all who makes it has a blast! And godspeed to Blackwolf.

I have blackwolfs resupply package. If this is any indicator of whAt he is carrying he has to have at least 10lbs of food. I hope I can make it up there to give to him. [

This is 9.9lbs of food that he sent

Ice, if you wouldn't mind sending me your address just in case we can't make it up to Carvers Gap. We have to at least try with Black Wolf's food, but I only have all weather tires and All Wheel Drive, no chains. Since we will be up there it would be nice to have a back up plan.

Just to let folks know, I got word just now from LD Cakes that Blackwolf is off the trail. He hitched back into Erwin yesterday. That's all I know for now. I'm glad he's not on the mountain today with highs forecast near 0* and windchills -25+.

Just heard from Uncle Johnny's. Black Wolf is there at the hostel. He hiked out at Indian Grave yesterday and hitch-hiked to the Hostel.

I didn't mean to imply that chains will be a must. However, chains might be a must. Rubber doesn't bite into ice all that well. I've got four wheel drive and all terrain mud+snow tires, but no chains. I've gone through three or four vehicles since the last time chains would have been needed in addition to four wheel drive.

Hard to say what Friday will be like. I do take ICE's opinion pretty seriously as he can see Roan from his office window.

no concerns if you can't make it, I can Resupply in town

Thanks for all the concern, truly humbles my spirit and foretells what a great community this group is. Conditions were just not conducive to hiking. I'll be shuttling to Carvers Gap Friday, might have to walk the road a bit, then head SOBO into Roan. I'll monitor here and adjust my plans according to who/if anyone is going to continue this hang. I will say if you don't have the gear for negative temps, stay home.

Above 4000' snow was 4-6" drifts deeper, when the winds gusted 20+ mph, it was white out conditions. I was never cold or uncomfortable, just wasn't making the miles in those conditions. I hit Beauty Spot and there was couple up there "just riding around" in a bad A$$ 4x4 Toyota..with conditions worsening, I asked for a lift to town, they happened to know Johnny ( Johnny's Hotel ) and drove me there.

We can always meet at Bob's Dairyland and talk about hanging ...

The wind that whipped through here yesterday ahead of the cold front was brutal down here in the valley, I can't imaging how bad it was up there on the Roan! Glad you're at a good place this morning and J-Walker was all over it trying to find out where you were for us! She rocks!
