Are you planning to make a tarp out of the mystery material, or just stuff sacks? Whatever you have should be plenty good enough for stuff sacks and will probably work fine for a tarp too. I really wouldn't worry too much about it unless you are a hanging hurricane hunter.
    Trust nobody!

I've been trolling the fabric department every visit I make and happened to find some that fit the bill so I bought them out. Unfortunately it was nowhere near wide enough for a tarp (except for my mini-hammock with mini-tarp for gear project) so I've started burning through some stuff sacks. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge and attempted trickery to harm myself

Silnyl is only waterproof to between 1-3 psi.... so even a cup can seep if concentrated on a small area or backed by another pressure.

FWIW, Spinacker will also seep under similiar conditions.

In tarps with reasonable pitch and ridge seam it is unlikely that seep will occur in either...Though true gully washers have been known to produce some misting.

Is it noisy? Or is it quiet when you wrinkle it? Can you give us some other characteristics of the fabric? I've gotten alot of nice high quality ripstop with a good DWR on it from one of the Wally Worlds here lately. Acts like what you decribe, it is slippery in the sense that one layer of fabric slips smoothly over the other. It did also have some of the best DWR coat I think I have ever seen from Walmart, even better then some of the ripstop Quest or Seattle Fabrics sells, but it was just a DWR layer.

If it is noisy it could also be kite spinnaker. I have whole rolls of that stuff, makes great tarps when pulled taunt, but also wears out quickly and it don't like UV much.

I took a small sample with me to my local outfitters where they had some dry sacks made out of sil and they were practically identical in texture, feel, sound, etc. so I guess that's what I'm sticking with. Thank you all again for the help.
