    BugSock & WinterSock

I started building the BugSock and WinterSock as a DIY service back before Dream Hammock existed. They originally came about because of the innovative work of JustJeff and Sgt Rock. JustJeff was, as far as I can find the originator of the sock concept and Sgt Rock refined the idea into a lightweight bug net many years ago. I began building these socks back in 2010 with their permission.

Here is my old hammock sock from Feb. 2008.....vented face but still had too much condensation. No bug-netting though.
Based off of Just Jeff's fully enclosed concept...though mine was just for me.
I am re-thinking one though for blowing snow and snow-drift on Winter backpacking trips after a discussion with Strung Out.
May be good to have in the kit.

Very nice looking sock. Just Jeff was one smart cookie back in those days.

I can see where a sock could make a big differance in really cold weather though, i'm getting one for my winter camping set up!
It seems like just jeff had a ton of good ideas

I'm glad to hear you are not planning to add a netted vent to your sock.
None of the netted covers have been proven thru a winter.

IMO the netted vents will stop the chimney effect you need to reduce or eliminate condensation from your breath when the temp hits 40F or below.
I think we will be reading alot of posts this winter saying Heah!, "I woke up wet". There's a trick to using/proper venting a sock or hammock cover and it's not intuitive.

Papa I have the perfect sock concept but it uses your hammock design and zippers schemes so I have not made it but you could. hint hint wink

I have the same concerns about our vented overcover. We've have some early positive feedback, but we haven't had people out in the cold temps to really say anything about their usefullness. We may have folks unzipping these vents further open to avoid icing up the noseeum mesh?

I'm all ears and would be happy to do the sewing and see where it leads us.

That is exactly what I would recommend. There is a learning curve to venting and I would hate to see an excellent design get slammed do to cockpit error.

Wow, OK here's my basic idea.
Use something very light weight like the new argon. Over size your Roaming Gnome basic design to allow for coverage of winter quilts.
Use your double zipper (one on each side) so an adjustable vent can be made at the head end.
Just like we do with your covered hammocks. see pick below
No suspension is required just have it slip over the ends of any gatherend hammock.

Since there are many different thicknesses of UQ's use a little shockcords to help snug everything up.

Blousy enough to cover but not compress a very think winter quilt

    The double zipper vent.

I did the initial work on a similar project some time ago for a WBBB, but it never got built and ended up as stuff sacks.
I was gonna call it the "4&20 Pie". Get it?

Maybe time to pull that old design out and see what we can do with it.

I hope something in there triggers your creative juices Papa. I don't claim to know if this is do-able or all the hoops you and the Mrs would have to do to make one of these.
I do understand this will not be a cheap 60 buck winter sock.
It would be designed more for those of us that winter camp more.

Should you deside to attempt this challenge I would be using an 11'x60" open SL hammock. I currently don't have a RL but would install one if needed to protect/support the top cover.
Please PM me the cost for labor and material and thanks again for listening to my idea and no hard feels if you decide to decline.
