    Insultex-ish UQ

    So let me first start off by saying that I have been doing a lot of research to determine the type of underquilt I should make. My budget is slim to say the least and I really enjoy maki things.

    I went on an overnight trip with Gideon and he was impressed with the setup I had and how little I have spent on it. That leads me to the underquilt, expensive, expensive, and last but not least, a lot of money. I thought to myself, "Why can't I make this too?" I didn't have enough money for down, or any of the fancy stuff, so, I figured this should work.... By the way, this is a work in progress, I should be done with it by the weekend to test it out, should be pretty chilly here in the Lou.

    Insultex, didn't order any from Diy gear, because I am way too impatient. So, just made some, researched what it was and came up with this;

    U-Haul cushion foam, 12"x480" and 3/32" thick.
    I will stay by weaving a basket pattern for two reasons, 1, flexibility, 2, another layer built right in

    I am thinking that I will do another (slightly smaller) weaved layer and then put that into a ripstop pocket of sorts. Also, I will be doing a shock cord channel and a stuff sack. I might also put an emergency blanket on the bottom (furthest layer from the hammock). Not too sure yet, any input would be much appreciated.

    Cool idea, I like your thinking.

    I wonder if the long edges were slightly elliptical you'd get a decent rounded UQ shape?

    Yes, I was going to taper the head and foot ends, I was also thinking putting a smaller third layer (I guess technically 6th) in the middle for extra warmth. I am assuming that I could get into the 30's with this UQ, I was also going to grab a cheap fleece throw for "freezer flaps". Let me know what you guys think.

    Would love to hear how this turns out. I saw a roll of this the other day at H depot and thought it had potential.my current DIY UQ isn't sufficient so I was wondering if I could use this to supplement. Moving into the 30's around here. May have to resort to alternate heat sources.

    Will do! Wish my dog could hang with me, but he is a bit too big.

    I am very interested in how this turns out. I've been scavenging the packing foam that our wide-band printers come shipped in at work so I have enough to make a 2 layer quilt. I love the weave idea you came up with.
