Down price and quality? help needed.

I found what appears to be 32oz of white goose down, 750 fill power for $90. (down, not feathers)

That seems like a really good price! right?
Is 750 even good for under quilts or top quilts? Would I need higher?

What are the cons to using non-treated non-water-resistant down? If my quilt is under a tarp how much do I need to worry about making sure my quilt has water-resistant down? my outer shell will probably be something water-resistant right?

Basically, someone talk me out of this if it really is a bad deal. To me it appears to be a steal!

    Thanks!

Assuming that it's not a scam in some way (always remember TANSTAAFL), then, yes, it's a wonderful deal. That's less than a third of what I pay per ounce for 850 fill.

As to cons, non-treated down will tend to lose loft in very humid conditions, but it's a slow process as long as you don't soak your down through dunking or exposure to pouring rain. If you're never out for multiple-week trips where retreat to a dry, warm place is untenable, untreated down is very viable. If you're going on an Arctic expedition where you expect to camp several hundred miles from help every day for the summer, I'd go with a different insulation.

Most good quilt shell materials incorporate at least a little DWR in their manufacture (and those that don't can have it added via various aftermarket products). This helps with minor splashback from the bottom edges of the tarp. It won't help with having your quilt out in a downpour or submerging it (but, then again, neither will DWR treated down or even synthetics).

    Hope it helps!

I think it's the same one i'm looking at getting on ebay. Check out some of the forum posts on goose down recently. 750 is considered very good down. Most down items are in the 750 range, only the most expensive items have 800+ FP down. 750 is only a fraction of an ounce heavier than 800 or 850. I'm not a gram weenie, so i don't concern myself with going super super super ultralight. I think 2.81 an ounce is a terrific price, much better than other vendors. You'll end up spending 3 times that price for down other places. Go for it, i am.

And down isn't all that bad to stuff. Yes, take precautions as others have said. Go slow, be careful and it will be a cinch.

Sounds like either a good deal or some kind of scam. Especially from eBay...
    Careful.

Thank you guys for the replies!

I too hope it isn't a scam. There are some positive reviews on a couple of different websites for the same product, so while I am confident the product is genuine, I don't think I will really ever know if the fill power is embellished or not.

I believe it to be worth the risk in this case. I will let you know how it turns out, and where to find it if it really ends up being a great deal.

If you provide a link to the product, it may be that the leg work has already been done by others and you won't have to take a risk.

~$3/oz is not atypical for 800FP bulk down from ebay in the form of myluxe pillows, although you usually have to buy about 64oz. A similar price for 750FP in a smaller quantity is fine imo.
