    WBRR underquilt

I recently purchased a Ridgerunner (have not received it yet) and will be getting an underquilt. The obvious answer is to get the Lynx becuase it will match up perfectly but I was wondering about the other UQ vendors. Brandon states the Lynx is roughly 30"x75" and some others are 42-44"W x 77-78" L. Will having the wider UQ be a waste of material/money since they will be taller than the side of the hammock? Also, will the wider UQ make the storage pockets a little harder to use?

    Yes.

The extra width is just extra weight and material to pack with no benefit. The Lynx and the other UQ that is specifically made to fit the RR (cough ) are shaped to fit the curves of the RR specifically so that there is no excess fabric and insulation that is not used and so that the saddle bags on the RR can be used without any fiddling.

It's all about the fitment. The UQs made for the RR fit and seal the underside of the hammock really well with little fuss. I've used a JRB MW4 and a 0* HG incubator with the RR. Both are fine pieces of gear that I would not hesitate to recommend to someone. Both ultimately got me down close to their rated temp but I found the amount of fuss and stress it seemed to be putting on the fabric, not worth it. I have found that, for me, the Lynx just works the best.

Can't speak to Paul's Ridge Creek UQ (other than to say his gear and service are top end) but I have experience with the full length Lynx. The Lynx fits so perfectly to the RR that it really is an attach and forget system, works like a charm with the saddle bags because it fits so well you don't even know it is there.

While you can use a wider UQ with the WBRR for the best possible fit and cost benefit a UQ designed for it will serve you best. The smaller and lighter UQ will help offset some of the additional weight the RR adds to your pack. The wider UQ also has a fair amount of fiddle factor and tends to have gaping along the sides at the knees resulting in some possible cold drafts. The suspension will most likely need to be reworked as well for the best possible fit of a traditional UQ.

A nice tight fit along the sides is important as you can see in the picture below.

The ability to vent is also a nice feature for extending the upper limits of the quilt as you can see in the picture below.

Regardless of your final decision you can't go wrong with any of the UQs specifically designed for the WBRR.

I have the WB full and torso length versions of the Lynx and Paul's (AHE) Ridge Creek UQ and they are all excellent hang and forget UQ's.
