Pan, Thanks for your concerns. Having a stove in any shelter, one needs to use safety precautions. TI Goats been making 1.1 Silnylon tipi for years with stoves in them and Kifaru uses something similar. I’m not trying to say these shelters are safe, just saying anyone that uses a stove needs to be safe in anything. I made a 1.1 Silnylon tipi last year and worked very well. I agree that you need to be awake while the stove is fired up. This is why I put the stove where I did, so I could fire it up in the morning.

I would be concerned with carbon monoxide poisoning as well. Seems every year some guy dies around the hunting season. Sitting in any enclosed area with things burning is dangerous. Propane heaters mostly, but cabon monoxide is deadly.

Very neat idea, just do be careful.

my concern would be heavy wind pushing things around, i wonder if a nomex sleeve for the stove pipe would make it less likely to catch something on fire?

Using it while on a paddle trip makes a lot more sense than backpacking. I'm never in camp long enough to justify a fire in a fire pit, much less setting up a stove. But I guess if you use it as a base camp like Turk does, it would be a great idea.

Gargoyle. The shelter is vented at the bottom and top, plus the pipe does a great job venting the smoke (cabon monoxide).

WBguy. I have some extra tieouts for the wind,,, but if its that bad,,, I won't fire up the stove.

I always close the damper so its still cool inside and fire last longer.

Thanks so much for posting this- might be an excellent transition shelter for couples where one hangs and one is still wary. how upset might you get if I also made one to this design? Thanks again, KM

Thanks! so far everything I make is for me- still getting used to sewing nylon/poly after years of working with natural fabrics...these Outdoor fabrics are slippy devils.

    Wind on the Pipe

Pretty cool. I am a big fan of stoves in the winter, and have found that an angled pipe works best at preventing spark holes. So far I haven't sprouted a single hole since angling the pipe. Also, I tie that pipe down on the tripod and the wind doesn't even begin to move it regardless of how hard it blows. Definately a hurricane-type setup.

Last month I was talking stoves and silnylon with Don of 4-dogs stoves, and he mentioned that silnylon almost explodes when it catches fire. That doesn't scare him away from using stoves under silnylon tarps, but it is just something to be aware of.

I'm planning to forego the tent/stove this year and just go with a hammock. Will still have a stove in my blind, but if I burn that down I will be out less than $100. Lighting up the hammock/underquilt would be a different story.
