    My DIY Winter SmokeHouse Shelter

I’ve owned and camp in many different size/shape tents all my life. During the Winter, it’s really nice to have a wood burning stove to cook on and for warmth. Backpackers didn’t have that luxury of a stove due to weight and bulk until Kifaru and TI Goat started making portable stoves. Last year I bought a small TI Goat stove for my DIY backpacking TIPI that worked very well which was made of 1.1 SilNylon… Now that I’m hanging, I really wanted to use the stove during the cold cold cold Winters. Some of you may like this and some may not… I call it my ‘SmokeHouse’ hint my name. It’s made with 1.1 SilNylon. The FiberGlass cloth for the stove pipe attaches to the shelter with 1.5” Velcro. On the top of the fiberglass cloth a rain fly is attached with ¾” Velcro. My SmokeHouse Weighs 1Lb 14 ozs. With cord and stakes a few oz’s more. The stoves heat will last about 2 hours with 1.5” wood before its gone, so I positioned the stove so I could add wood if needed. In the morning just relight it without getting out of the hammock in the cold. In addition, the stove will fire up quickly with twigs and cooks extremely well. Hope you like my design.

Weren't the Jack's making something like this one time? I remember seeing it, but now (as usual) I can't find the thread. Looks like a interesting idea...

Just out of curiosity, is it really that feasible in the backcountry?

Now that is one cool looking setup. Looks similar to the one that Turk had setup in one of his videos but a little more packable. Looks like it would be a good rig for some paddling. Great work Smokehouse. Did you make it all yourself?

For someone thats on the trail trying to make good time,,, no, its not feasible. I do alot of bow hunting, so I wanted more of a backpacking base camp. I know Turk has a shelter where he has the large TI stove in it...

Temps, I would use it below 25f for a base camp.

    Yes,,, made it myself,,, stormcrow

That is really really cool - I can't imagine myself ever carrying that kind of weight, but that could keep one crazy warm in the winter. I actually really like the asymetrical shape of the hammock hut type design you've got there, for general hammocking usage even without the stove pipe. I'd love to see a similar design put into production, sort of the best of both worlds between the JRB hammock hut and the Warbonnet Superfly.

The weight would be about 3lbs more than normal.

    1lb tarp vs. 2lb smokehouse.
8oz al stove and fuel vs. TI small stove 2lbs 8oz.

Putting a stove, stove jack or not, in Silnyl is a serious safety hazard.... Doing so risks your life.... Silnyl is flamable...

Turk put a stove is a one off prototype made of some 4 oz per yard certified flame retardant material... Even then, he had issues when a stack line broke/melted and the hot stack fell on the material.

This is a nice looking project.... But it is dangerous, possibly life threatening... definately recommend the stove be out cold before going to sleep in a sealed up silnyl tent.
