    Atlanta, GA>Dec 31-Jan 1, Peach Bowl!!!

I'm trying to combine a hammock camping trip and Peach Bowl for New Year's.

My beloved Rebels will kickoff vs TCU at lunch on New Year's Eve. I'll likely depart North MS super early that morning, drive over, catch the game, and then go camp somewhere.

I need some suggestions for places to hang nearby. I have some relatives in Alpharetta that I'll be ringing in the New Year with. Something on the north side of ATL would be ideal.

    Thanks! Hotty Toddy!!!

Depends on what you consider to be close. Unicoi State Park and Vogel State Park are a little over an hour away from Alpharetta. Unicoi has some walk-in sites (not backpacking sites, just not sites that you can't back a camper into) that should be darn near empty that time of year. If I remember correctly campsite 72 works well for a hammock. You're also about an hour away from the Chattahoochee National Forest. Cheaper camping but will take more research to find camping locations.

Any chance your relatives might have a couple of good trees?

    Not that I remember.

I'm seriously considering driving back this direction after the game and spending the night. If I make it to Birmingham, I'll get off at Hamilton and go hang at the Sipsey. Yes, I could drive all the way back home but then I wouldn't get to sleep in my hammock!

I had a consulting project in Birmingham on 2012, I'm almost positive I stayed at the RV campground at John Tanner State Park, I think I paid about $20, but I got a hot shower for that! And I didn't have to sleep in one of those square things with who knows what on it! Anyways it wasn't that far off the interstate and easy to find. I'd stay again when the opportunity presents itself. Noisy cows from a nearby farm that night though. I arrived after dark and left early, can't attest to the amenities, the lake looked nice and the shower was average campground facilities. It's about an hour from Atlanta towards Birmingham.

If you're headin' back out I-20 dirtwheels has suggested a good possibility in John Tanner Park. We've camped there a time or two. Pretty nice place.

Cheaha SP over near Bham should offer some possibilities, Talledega NF should offer possibilities too.

I think I've settled on Talladega National Forest. There's a place about 20 minutes off of I-20 that is only $3 a night. It's about 1.5 hr on this side of ATL. Might check out some trails while I'm there. Trip Report to follow if stars align...
