    recycled junk

Bit of a pack rat. Because you never know... Both toggles are similar in weight. Not super ultra light at ~3/4oz for the pair (~0.7gm/cm). Bamboo from the remnants of a garden stake/pole. Carbon fiber the excess pole length from shortening an old pair of nordic ski poles to hiking poles. Both are strong enough to suspend my dead load body weight and "bouncing" body weight.

I found these gutter nail standoffs in the shop today. They are 1/2" OD, 5" long, and ribbed on the inside which might give them more strength. They would make good toggles!

I've been collecting broken golf club shafts.
Graphite, light, strong. I can bring some to
the MAHHA hang if anyone is interested.
With a hacksaw blade & sandpaper, we can
make them to length right there.
    Let me know.

What's wrong with sticks picked up off the ground?

I've never yet seen trees suitable for hammocks without sticks on the ground.

Kind of hard to beat the carry weight.

It is ok to use sticks for toggles but you need to use little huggers on them. And the little huggers weigh more then a toggle so you might as well just carry the toggle.

Actually I like the idea of selfcontained suspension. Although i am probably going to wind up with trail sticks.

    What do mean "little huggers"?

We simply tie the marlin spike in the tree hugger with the stick.

Do you mean the tree hugger??

...little huggers for the little sticks.

    It's a LNT joke.

Ok - so from what MacEntyre wrote and from your desire for a self-contained system, what you mean is that you just don't want to have to rely on anything other than what you carry.

    Reasonable and highly desirable.

I would hate to hit the deck in the middle of the night due to the failure of a scrounged part.

I once worked with an engineer who designed control panels. On every project, when we were on the way to acceptance testing by the fabricator, he would discover that he left out some push button or toggle switch. he would then to go Radio Shack and buy the device he needed. Nearly every client ended up with one part from Radio Shack. We crossed our fingers and prayed that we would never hear about some Bhopal type incident resulting from that unique feature.
