Its also a matter of knowing your local species and which ones are likely to hide danger. A coupe of weeks ago I was helping out with a class, we were in an open tin shed, sort of a small open ended barn, when the very healthy gum tree beside us decided to dump a very large (30-40kg) limb onto the roof. Without the shed, we wouldn't have been there, but still. the branch was fully green and leafed.
I've also watched other eucalyptus shed branches for no reason, one right over a walkway between cabins with kids running everywhere, that was a near miss.
Its always a risk, but there are ways to minimize them.
