Build a Tarp - Need Help

    Hi everyone,

for people who have recently built a tarp where should I be shopping and what mistakes should I avoid? I am on a super tight budget, but I am good with a thread injector.

Any and all advice is welcome!!!

    thanks

Glad to hear you are looking to try your hand at DIY! There is nothing more satisfying to me than making my own gear.

Hear is a site for patterns:
    http://diygearsupply.com/diy-guides/tarps/

Here are a couple good sites to check out for materials:
    http://questoutfitters.com
    http://diygearsupply.com

Read up on stuff, get you so material and get to sewing, er…. injecting!

I made one out of Tyvek. When I was done everything was great except I did not want bright white with all the Dupont advertisiong, etc. So I thought no problem. I'll spray paint it with acrylic paint. The acrylic gets a better lock onto the Tyvek surface.

But the smell!! I thought it would dissipate after a while. Here we are 2 months later and it still really stinks...

    My advice: Don't use Tyvek

Ripstopbytheroll.com has the best prices on silnylon that I've seen.

Mistakes to avoid are just the usual, measure twice cut once, with that much fabric you have to be careful not to sew extra folds in, especially whilst doing the ridgeline seam, and don't pull the fabric tight when hemming the cat cuts.
