    Hey guys,

I had some last minute freelance work put up and it seems I will not be making it to the hang. I was really looking forward to meeting some other AZ hangers. Hopefully the next hang will be in the near future and I can make that one.

    Hi Roadtorque:

If you could possibly meet us at the Casino at 7:00 AM, I will be very willing to follow you and stay close while you drive in to Canyon Creek with your car. My son and I will be in a Jeep (2 seats). But, if you get in a jamb in your car, we could pull you out or at least get you back to safety.

I will send you a PM with my mobile phone number, just for safety. Please think it over.

Just got back from my day hike with the guys. I had to return home but had a great time up there while it lasted. The latest forecast is "Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 20. Light north northwest wind." A lot of the guys had new gear to try out. It should be exiting to hear the reports later

We had 6 people attend, of which 5 spent the night on saturday. I believe that roadtorque and longbow have some pictures that hopefully will be posted here.

It was a blast. We now have the AZ bragging rights of hanging in temps with a 14.6 degrees overnight low. A full 10 degrees colder than the forecast. It was pretty windy and gusty earlier in the day, but by evening the wind had pretty much settled out. Everybody's gear performed well. All of us stayed warm and toasty, but a few people did complain about cold feet. I was trying out my Feathered Friends down booties and am happy to report that they worked really well for me. Those are highly recommended and I think a few in our group now plan to purchase a pair of them. I also used a JRB 10x11 tarp pitched low to the ground, ENO DoubleNest w/whoopies, JRB MW4 underquilt and JRB No Sniveler as a top quilt. For head insulation I used a JRB down hat and a Smartwool neck gaiter. For my torso I had a thin synthetic long sleeved base layer, and a thin long sleeved merino wool layer over that, followed by a Marmot Driclime vest. I also had a Montbell down inner jacket along, but did not sleep in it. For my legs I used a pair of light nylon Rail Riders Adventure pants with a pair of thin synthetic long johns underneath. I felt that with this combo I could have easily gone even lower in temperature. As we would expect, the MW4 underquilt worked fantastically at this temperature. I loved the differential cut and had no issues keeping that quilt positioned underneath me, and foot area retained plenty of loft - something that I've been concerned about. If you don't mind carrying a little extra weight and don't want to deal with the hassle of a pad, that quilt is pure luxury. I did experiment around with the quilt in the afternoon before it got real cold, and found that, for me, attaching both of the middle biners was necessary to product enough tension in the quilt to eliminate any cold spots.

We also had a couple of MW3's in our group and people had good reports on those as well. Te-wa had his Winter Coat along, and let me tell you that this thing is a loft monster. Significantly more loft than my MW4. There's no telling how low you could go in that quilt with the right pad combination. A great option for saving on weight as you push down into those colder temps.

We did do some fly fishing saturday afternoon, but alas, no fish. We did still manage to have a pretty nice feast on saturday night. We set up a grill over coals from the campfire. Some of us had fajitas with marinated flank steak, bell peppers and onions wrapped up in tortillas with green chiles, salsa and shredded cheese. Along with several liters of Angelo's amazing margarita recipe, consisting of lime juice, tequila and Agave nectar. There was also some chicken skewers well seasoned with lime juice, garlic and all kinds of other yummy spices, assorted other grilled vegetables and zucchini strips, spicy grilled chicken sausage. I'm more typically more of a boil in bag kind of guy on backpacking trips, so this was an amazing feast for me. For relatively short overnight trips, I think the bar has definitely been raised from now on. All this food I'm sure helped us to stay warmer overnight. Naturally all of our water containers were frozen to some degree in the morning. I did fire up my Bushbuddy Ultra in the morning and melt boil some water to make up some of that Starbucks Via coffee. I think this coffee is incredible and has been along on all my trips for several weeks now.

It was great to meet up with more hangers, and especially more HF members who share our passion for gear and hanging in the great AZ outdoors. I have no doubt that another AZ hang will happen in the near future. We probably go out on around two trips per month. Hope to see you folks again soon. Roadtorque & Longbow and Jacob, it was really nice to meet you.

    Arizona Hangout November 21-22, 2009

As promised, here are some pictures from the Arizona Hangout this weekend. There was good comradeship, laughs, and sharing of knowledge throughout the trip. We all had a great time meeting new friends or continuing existing relationships.

The Arizona Hangout started at the Airplane Flats Campground, from which we made a short hike along Canyon Creek to a nice spot in the Ponderosa Pines. We set up camp on an east facing slope overlooking Canyon Creek and possessing of good characteristics to block the wind and catch the early morning sun.

There were six campers; Te-Wa, Roadtorque, pisanodc, drewboy, Longbow, and Bear Killer (my 17 year old son's new trail name). Everyone comes from varied backgrounds with lots of backpacking knowledge. There was a great deal of gear around the camp which provided a good opportunity for everyone to check out new techniques and equipment.

Those that fished Canyon Creek had a chance to catch a trout on this Class V stream. Fly rods and artificial baits are the order of the day. Others stayed around camp to rest or finish fine tuning their individual campsites. On Saturday afternoon we had winds of 10-15 MPH with gusting winds up to 20 MPH. Afternoon temperatures were in the upper 30's to low 40's. It felt cold enough to add an extra layer of clothing to cut the wind. By 6:30 PM, the temperatures were moving down towards the low 30's; but thankfully the winds had started to subside.

We had a great campfire; and each camper had packed an assortment of fresh food to cook over the coals. There are some incredible campfire cooks among the Arizona group. I will leave it to others to describe their individual menus. But, suffice it to say, that everyone was well fed.

We had great conversations throughout the weekend, and of course we "overloaded" on talk about hammock gear. Several among the Arizona group have tuned up their camping outfits to achieve very low pack weights (at least compared to mine). I was impressed by all that I saw and heard.

For most of us, the big news of the trip was that the over night low temperature on Saturday night was recorded by pisanodc at 14.6 degrees. That was a new "hammocking" low temperature record for most (if not all) of the campers at the Arizona Hangout. Everyone was proud and eager in the morning to share their experiences in dealing with the cold. We were all envious of drewboy, who was sporting a pair of Feathered Friends down booties by the campfire. Notably, several used down balaclavas or caps, which made a big difference in warmth for them.

Hot coffee tasted good in the morning, after a long cold night. Some guys had the new Zia instant coffee, which they seemed to enjoy very much. We broke camp and hiked out just before mid-day on Sunday. After loading up individual vehicles we met about an hour later in Payson for lunch and final farewells.

Many thanks to Te-Wa for setting things in motion for the Arizona Hang this weekend. It was great meeting everyone. Both my son and I are looking forward to another outing at some time in the future.

That just Ps's me off! Cause I was not there! It is endlessly amazing how one state can be so dang hot AND so dang cold! ( Guess that is because the elevation ranges from below sea level to not quite 13,000 ft.)

PS: How about some names to go with those faces in the pics?

Couldn't you have gathered some more fire wood?

Hey BillyBob! The amount of diversity in this state is indeed amazing.

I'll try to assign names to faces in Longbow's pictures:

Top row, 3rd picture from left group shot, from left to right - Roadtorque aka Bo, Jacob (Longbow's son), Te-wa aka Mike, Pisanodc aka Angelo, Drewboy aka Andy.

Top row, 4th picture from left group shot, from left to right - Roadtorque aka Bo, Te-wa aka Mike, Longbow aka Walt, Pisanodc aka Angelo, Drewboy aka Andy.

2nd row, last picture on right - a good variety of down products visible. Left, Angelo aka PapaSmurf with a Down Works down balaclava, Middle, Drewboy with the stylish JRB hood, Montbell down inner jacket and Feathered Friends down booties, and Right, Te-wa sporting the now hugely popular BlackRock down beannie.

We can thank Walt for diligently collecting most of that firewood. Turns out we used most of it. A fire in the morning with temps in the teens was quite welcome.

Thanks for the names with faces, Drewboy(Andy)! It really was cold for before thanksgiving. Reminds me of the ~zero I hit around Thanksgiving 83 attempting to hunt elk somewhere near Knoll lake on the rim. The zero followed in after a huge snowstorm.

I noticed a few days back it was about -5 up at Big Sandy Trailhead in the Wind Rivers of Wyoming, at 9100 feet. Brrrrr! But it is supposed to be cold in WY, AZ is where everybody from the NE ( especially retirees AKA the Snowbirds) goes to escape the cold. A person could get a cold back with a hammock if not careful!
