I have taken my Eno Tarp length and allowed for couple extra inches minimum for tie and securing to tree etc and I hike with trekking poles so I took my pole heights and figured 3 poles distance is my minimum tarp setup from tree to tree...I love the rope (measuring rope) idea however I hike with poles and will use them since I already have them..

I use my poles as a general guide for which trees to use.

Here's a handy trick: with ridgeline intact, lay out your hammock on the floor/ground. Starting at one end, walk to the other in normal even steps, counting as you go. Add one more step to the count. The next time you are in the woods and looking for a place to hang, pace the distance between two trees to see if the distance is sufficient (more is OK). Do the same for your tarp for when you plan to use your tarp (the more likely scenario).

I step it off. 1 long step is about 3 feet. 4 steps equal 12 feet. That's my minaul spacing.

I do something similar, but I step heel-to-toe with my giant feet. First few times I hung the hammock, I found that 10+ steps on level ground is basically guaranteed to work. A couple more steps is better, and I guesstimate adjustments for variables like steep gradients and significant variations in tree trunk sizes.
