Thanks for the info Firebird. I'll probably park at the Moffit TH Friday, 20th Feb, and set up camp a bit up the trail. Have a fun day hike north and back on Saturday.

Before my trip to Birkhead I pretty much picked through the pictures on this site. Birkhead

How's the Ranger Station stocked on books of the forest?

AKA Pete, I can't answer your question on the ranger station as I haven't been in there in a while. I've made some very complete topo maps of this whole trail system at 1:24000 and have them in PDF which can be printed to scale. If you're interested, send me a PM with your email (can't attach here) and I'll send them to you. I also have made them to install on Garmin GPS if you use them.

One other thing...Don Childrey has a very well done new addition (2014) to his book on the Uwharries. He did a real nice job on it (nice fellow too)! I'll see if I can find a link for his new one. Too late for a link but here it is...http://donchildrey.com/books/uwharri...econd-edition/

    Thanks for the book link.

I've got a set of the 1:24,000 maps and scan/print the sections I'm going to hike. I also run a "Map My Hike" app on the new sections and draw the route onto the map when I get home. Little Old School but works or me.

The maps I've made have all the trails on them which I have hiked and gps'd many times to check for accuracy and they looked just like USGS 7.5' quad except also contain the trail data. They are done in UTM projection and have a 1000 meter grid already drawn to make plotting positions very easy. Just saying.
