    Underquilt Materials

Hey all. So I'm going to start my first underquilt construction today. For all you purists, I'm cheating for now just to get a feel for it. I plan on making a much nicer one in the near future from scratch. I'm using an ozark trail (walmart) sleeping bag with some webbing and i was wondering what everyone is using in the way of thread when sewing? Any tips/hints? Thanks!

Gütermann thread. Your local fabric store will have small spools of sew-all polyester thread which will work well for an UQ.

Jo-ann Fabrics carries quite a few colors of the gutterman threads.

You could try it, but Ramblinrev had some wise words on why we use polyester thread rather than nylon for DIY projects.

It's not cheating! I've used converted sleeping bags from the start. In fact, I made two new ones last week. Gütermann thread is the best, JMHO, but any good polyester thread will work.

The draw back to using the Ozark trail down sleeping bag is that the down quailty is marganaile at best.

I tried it and I waisted almost $100 in the attempt....

I found a better way....wait till walmart or target puts the down pillows on sale....

the 500 down pillow from target is 80% down/20% small feathers...

I got mine in 2013 for $19.00 on sale and made an UQ that would most likely rate at 30deg. or cooler....

30inch by 40inch UQ with 3.5 inch baffles ................works great down to 28deg. that is the best I have done till tonight...

It is 16 deg. with a 14mph wind at this time.....I had to pee and get a drink tonight. I was warm with the 0deg big Agnus sleeping bag and my DIY UQ. I could feel the wind every now and then....I will be looking in to the UQ protector....of some kind to block the wind......
or I may put doors on the tarp??????

One or more of the above should solve this problem....Time for coffee and my 3mile rune before work at 7am....
