    1st outing in a Hammock

    Ok guys,
I want to first thank everyone for the welcome to the site and to all who have posted to my questions prior to going out.
I went out with my brother and we both did Hammock camping for the first time. I bought a used Eno DN and my brother had a new one. I will say that I definitely dealt with stretching of the straps. The first night I dropped about 10" and the 2nd night with rain I basically was brushing the ground. Overall we had a great weekend temps got down to 28* and we both were really warm. We had Reflextics, thermx pad and a 0* bag.
I have decided I want to goto whoopie slings for strength and ease of adjustment and might then do the straps and hitch as well. I also realize my standard Eno profly is NOT a winter shelter fly as is barely covers the sides of me so I will be researching that as well.
I had made a ridge line at the mathematics provided by previous posts. It worked well however it was super tight on 1 hang and loose on another. I expect with the whoopie slings the ease of adjustment will allow for a better hang.

Welcome Hawk i (don't think I've said that yet...)

Looks like a sucessfull first trip. Sounds as though you're right on track with the learning curve that we've all been through. Any other suspension besides those straps should fix your stretch problem. I'm a cheap old redneck, and I've always used whoopies made from te yellow hollow-braid poly rope like you can buy most anywhere. Make sure it's hollow-braid -- this makes it really easy to splice and adjust. There's no sag, and it hasn't let me down yet (yeah, pun intended )

That's a gorgeous spot to hang out, love the waterfall. I'm originally from PA and still have relatives in Manheim.

BTW, since this is a family-friendly site, you might wanna crop your peeing brother out of future photos. Hahahaaa

I have the ENO setup and enjoy it. My suggestion is that depending on the weather, depends on the distance of tarp and hammock. If there is not a chance of rain, i keep the tarp up higher for coverage and I can see out. If there is a chance of rain, my tarp and hammock are very close. Once you get in, you will notice there a much more space that develops. Looking at the pics, I would just suggest raising the hammock more, then coverage will be what is needed.

That's the best way to camp in those Pa rocks. Nice spot to hang in.

Jiminy Crickets that is such a SWEET looking spot! And definitely shows some of the pros to hammock camping over ground dwelling. That ground is neither level, or smooth - but man! it is beautiful!

I like that plastic sheet ya got hanging from the one side there - on yer tarp. What is it? How is it attached?

Thanks for posting up the photos!

Welcome to the site, and congrats on your first hang. Really beautiful hang site there.

As for the tautness of your ridgeline, that will be determined by your hang angle. Try to get it as close to 30° as often as you can. Ridgeline should be taut, but not so taut it can't be twisted between your fingers a bit.

U.willie, the clear plastic was a cheap rain poncho clipped to the fly. Reason I did this was because of the slope and my attachment points on the trees when I got into the hammock it would settle to the far left side of my fly so knowing we had rain coming during the night I didn't want the fly dumping water on me so this was done as a wall effect.
