    Material for dog hammock

    Hi gang,

I am planning out a dog hammock build to give to my new pup so he can hammock camp with me. I have the general plans worked out, I just need to decide on fabric type.

I need the floor to the pup's hammock to be dog nail proof. Is there a lightweight fabric that can deal with dog nails?
Any input is very appreciated and I'll be sure to document my progress.
    Thanks!

Epsilon is very abrasion resistant, which can be important with the doggie claws. I once had a 5 yard roll of it delivered to my house and the UPS driver tossed it over the fence into the yard. The dog thought it was hers. She dragged it around the yard for about three hours before I got home. Only thing wrong with it was that about a foot had been pulled out at the end of the roll and there was a 1 inch long tear in it near the corner.

I've used Supplex nylon from Quest outfitters, but you could try 1.9 oz ripstop, too, which would be lighter. I looked for "Epsilon fabric" just now, but couldn't find any. Was yours camo, Sarge?

Do dogs like hammocks? I'm sure it depends on the type. I never tried it but I'm sure my Aussie would have freaked out!

Yah. Its only available in MultiCam and is made by Duro. If you buy it from the factory, its over $11.00 a yd, but I get mine from this guy:

Its also water and wind resistant, basically a superior DWR using Nanosphere coating. Makes a great outer shell for a quilt and a real nice UQP.

It's a concern, but I'm going to train mine as a pup. He's only 9 days old right now so when I get him in 6 or so weeks I'll start getting him used to it. Also, it will be a mini bridge hammock so it will be a shape he will understand.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've never heard of Epsilon before. Thanks for the link. I'm going to do some research about it. I might incorporate a removable protection panel to protect the actual hammock body with layer of durable fabric...

    I love the stuff.

I just bought 10 yards from that Ebay seller. I need to not link to him anymore b/c I buy more every time I do it.

Some dogs take to hammocks easily, others need help. I had one dog who would get into his insulated hammock if I told him to, but never chose to get in by himself. Once there, I think he appreciated that it was warmer than being on the ground, though he would have preferred being on top of me in my hammock (which I did not allow after one cold wet trip in March). We have a little dog that happily levitates, landing on my stomach, but won't get into a hammock by himself. I rigged a small hammock for him that hung from the ridge line above my hammock. I loosened the suspension rope for his hammock at one end (which passed through a biner on the ridge line) so the hammock lay loose on top of me. I called him, he jumped in, and I pulled his suspension rope which lifted his hammock just high enough that he wouldn't be dancing on my gut when he got up to turn around. You might try something like that to get your pup used to his hammock. Depending on his size, you may want to have him graduate to a bigger hammock as he grows. Good luck! I think 8 to 10 weeks is a good age at which to separate a pup from its mother. She has things to teach it that we don't know. A male dog's urinary tract takes longer to develop, too, so think of waiting to spare yourself some weeks of cleaning up puddles.
