    fabric?

I've seen multiple references to using the walmart $1 fabric bin. Can you use this stuff for a weight bearing hammock? Has anybody found anything in these bins that comes close to rip-stop in weight/strength?

Hancock Fabrics in my town sells Fabri-quilt #128. According to the Fabri-quilt website this is 1.9 oz rip stop. I bought 3 yards (actually got 10.5 feet) for my DIY hammock.

Is on-line/mail order the only source for 1.1 oz silnylon? I make trips to Atlanta from time to time. Is there a store there that stocks this material?

1.9oz ripstop from Walmart is fine for hammocks...just make sure it's not damaged or anything. If you're lucky, you can find 1.1oz sil there, but not very often. Otherwise, online is about your only option.

oh yeah, a lot of folks have made hammocks from the $1.00 stuff.
it can get a little tricky figuring out what to get, but they usually have something that's hammock worthy.
sometimes they have rip stop... either something close to 1.1oz or 1.9oz. but i have made several hammocks out of non- rip stop.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Everything I have made has been from fabric from the WM $1 bin. I have found 1.1oz ripstop, 1.9oz ripstop, Supplex, Silnylon, DWR coated ripstops, etc...

Okay except the Tyvek, webbing (not really material), and the silk for my silk hammock. Almost everything.

Man, I hardly find anything at walmart, but I only go there 3 times a year. I did get 18yds of 1.1oz Sil Navy Blue. Used that all up while I was learning to sew. I made a couple backpacks with it, a couple tarps, some snake skins, and some other crap.

I have 7 or 8 Walmarts within a 30 min drive from me so when I first started raiding the dollar bin I would hit each one every couple of weeks. Needless to say I have a lot of fabric.

There is only one WM that still has a fabric dept now so my options are limited. I may have to start paying full retail for my fabric!

Down here in the Tampa Bay area I have not found any silnylon, ripstop, dwr, etc at all. I've looked in WalMart, Joanns fabrics and Micheals. SO it look like online for me. When I've asked about them I just get these blank looks.

most people in those stores have never done an outdoor project, so they usually don't have a clue about the kind of fabrics we're looking for<g>.
