Bear and hammock in the news in Colorado

Well, those folks up in Aspen must be feeding the bears some awfully good food. I think this is number 3 this summer in Aspen. This one is a little different and news is still breaking, but the rumors floating around (I've heard it from 4 different people today; same story) is that the woman was lounging on her porch when a bear scratched her. What the news article isn't saying, but what I'm hearing, is she was actually asleep in her hammock when the bear scratched her leg and woke her up. I think he was trying to ask her if he could try her hammock.

Still, the bear was euthanized due to "aggressive behavior". Makes me very sad since it was probably a case of the bear being accustomed to easy food sources around town.

I'm not even pretending to be an expert on bear behavior but 2 questions came to mind...
    1. The bear scratched her? All that I have read talks of "scratching" as an investigational behavior, not an aggressive behavior.
    2. She didn't require medical treatment. How bad was she scratched? Bad enough to need to put the bear down seems to at least indicate she was hurt. 2+2=1 here.

Sorry for the lady, but more sorry for the bear.

Where's the picture of the hammock???

She needed a double-layered hammock made from the bulletproof spectra fabric like they use in the Ursacks.

I work as a biologist for the great state of Arizona and would like to take this opportunity to shed some light on bear behavior.

This was likely a dispute over critical bear habitat.

Aspen is full of ornery bears that are not afraid of humans, so I hear on line.

I've heard that bears (in general?) sometimes have a somewhat different relationship with the distaff side of our group. I've also had a few run in's myself and I have come to believe that bears not naturally afraid of humans are no longer "good" bears. Have come too close to a bear claw in the mountains and now prefer only those at the doughnut shop.

    Sailor's haul clear of bears.

Being from Colorado, I'll post my opinion on this. People decide to pass laws to protect the animals. They close up hunting lands and oddly enough, there are fewer animals, whether it's prey or predator, being killed by hunters. Natural habitat becomes crowded and the animals get closer to towns looking for food. And when the pretty deer come to towns, the mountain lions and bears follow the food and end up in town too. Then these people start feeding the animals and take pictures and have friends come look at the "pet" wildlife. Then a mountain lion kills a $1500 poodle for a snack or a bear dumps over trash cans or scratches a lady dozing and the animal must be killed. Makes no sense to me. I've seen both mountain lions and bears in the mountains here. Hate to see one killed due to something like that.
Of course, just my opinion, and I'm sure it scared the he** out of that woman.
