Hungry Howie Quilt Question

that....... any way. I was thinking about making a HHQ and I was wondering if anyone tried fleece as the inside layer instead of ripstop. Would it pack down small or the fleece cause it to be bulky. How small do these quilts pack down if made as instructions indicate?

It will definitely be bulkier than ripstop, albeit softer and warmer. If you don't mind the weight & bulk difference, you will definitely enjoy it.

That said, I love my JRB down quilts - they are 100% ripstop.

One more thought - if it's the comfort of fleece you seek, why not add a strip of 100wt fleece to the upper 1/3 of the inside? That way you get softness/warmth on your torso & neck.

The fleece would absorb mosture into your insulation. DWR ripstop is breathable, but will stop water if you pour it on. Unlike fleece.

If you are looking for something that feels better, your at the Momentum90 offered from thru-hiker.com . Someone on WB is making a quilt out of that and said it had a different feel than ripstop. AYCE from thru-hiker would be helpful with questions on it. The stuff is pricey though.

You could put fleece over ripstop. It will add extra weight. The needle holes from sewing the fleece on would also allow water in.

Are quilt liners made from DWR? I thought they were untreated for extra breathability.

See I thought they where untreated also. Is the JBR noshivers treated?

Did you mean the JRB No Sniveller?

JBR quilts are made from 1.1oz ripstop with a DWR coating.

I'll let the Jacks say for sure, but based on my novice fabric opinion I think they are. If you look at the JRB quilts, or a good sleeping bag, the ripstop is shinney and you cannot see any small holes or texture to it.

When I look at the DWR and uncoated ripstop I bought, the quilt shells look like DWR.

Actually I pretty sure they are. The DWR is what holds the down inside. For a syn quilt you would not need this, but I think you will have the waterproofing.
