Between the recent move, the new donkeys, and the sick pets I have been slacking in my scouting efforts. Do you have any campsite ideas food? I like the idea of it being near a jeep trail, but my knowledge is pretty limited to west and northwest of Denver. I think JJ is looking for a place down south and the only walking I've done down there was the Pikes Peak Trail.

I know a couple of places near Grant that would be pretty good.

    Burning Bear

I think the road is plowed up to the Burning Bear and Abyss Lake Trailhead near Grant.

Peru Creek near Keystone would be good.

Alice near St Mary's Glacier would be good.

Second Creek near Bethoud Pass is good.

Rolling Creek Trailhead between Segment 3 and 4 on the Colorado Trail is good.

Meadow Creek near Frisco is good.

There are plenty of good places. Setting a date to make vacation plans is the issue.

Well, the full moon dates are Feb 2 and March 11; neither on a weekend. The only holiday in Feb and March is Valentine's Day and no way I'll get out of that one.

I think those will be the best two months for a Winter Hang while still giving enough lead time for planning. Of course, with the weather out here, it may be starting to get wet by late March. My vote would be anytime between Feb 1st and the Ides of March.

Anybody that's planning on coming have a preference or different viewpoint? I suspect when JJ is done with his schooling he'll probably be fine with whatever weekend we pick.

My vote is the weekend of Feb 5th. We won't have a full moon, but it will be getting close, so it should provide a nice nightlight for any moonlit hikes. And it should be plenty cold, especially if we do Burning Bear. The winter winds there will test the merit of anybody.

    full moon?

    My calendar says full moons: 1/30, 2/28 & 3/30.

The weekend BEFORE the full moon gives you early moonlight.

The weekend AFTER the full moon gives you moonlight for breakfast.

    February has longer days.

My first preference is February 27/28.

    Second preference is January 23/24.

While I have no problem driving nearly 1,200 miles (one way) to a hang out, I suspect I'll pass,,,, this time.....

Pretty sure camp will be very close to parking (within 1 mile). However, the sites I'm familiar with that have been discussed in this thread so far, are all very near some good hiking.

Winter car camping in Colorado is difficult. They often lock the outhouses so that camping too close to the road is a sanitation problem come the spring melt.

A mile max from a plowed road. We will need either snowshoes or skis.

I have a couple of shovels and three pair of snowshoes. REI rents gear. This should not be a problem for warm weather folks.

    Who told you that!?

I really like Burning Bear for a site idea. I did quite a bit of cold testing up there. The road is usually plowed, but even then I suspect many won't make it past Whiteside campground without a 4x4 depending on conditions. I've had to bail a few times because I couldn't make it up. Whiteside has about 7, maybe 8 good hang spots there in the campground, so I'm not sure it would make a good back-up site depending on how many folks show. Course, Burning Bear has no winter water and Whiteside does have the river running thru it.

Still, Burning Bear offers a beautiful Colorado Winter scene. There are enough trees to host half of the HF community at that campground. It's in a high mountain valley with a trailhead less than 1/2 mile away. If the weather is really nice and the road is passable, Guanella Pass is not far off so flatlanders could go see what life looks like above the tree line. There are plenty of fire rings and, last year at least, one of the port-a-lets was unlocked.

It's about an hour from my house in Denver, maybe 1.5 hours from the airport.
