saturday feb 27 south mountain park NC

A few of us have been planning an overnighter on saturday feb 27 at south mountains state park NC.

The idea is to hike in to the top and camp up there. There is water up there and a nice campground. Reportedly not a difficult path to follow but steep on the way up. Privy too I hear.

Our plan is to meet at the trailhead saturday am.

Any winter backpackers feel like joining us? No one is completely committed yet but 4 people are likely as of now.....

I'd love to, but I'm so fat now I wouldn't be able to make it. Would anyone be willing to carry me if I promise to pack light? Coming back down wouldn't be a problem---I can just roll, or you could tie a rope to me and drag me.

I might be able to go... I've wanted to visit SoMtnSP for a while. Talked to NCPatrick about it last year. Talked to an old friend who's been there. Discovered Old NC 18 north of SoMtnSP is one of the best motorcycle roads ever. If the weather's good, if Smiling Face is healthy, if the dog doesn't whine, if either Thing1 or IronK want to go... I'll be there!

Weather permitting and some rescheduling to clear out, but I'm interested. There's another event here in my back yard. I think they're all ground dwellers

I thought I might make some converts

I've got a family get together that day in Ridgeway, Va ... so even a visit is not in the cards for me that weekend.

Sounds like it might get a little crowded with those grounders and their get together.

I just like the thoughts that spring is getting closer. My two favorite seasons ... spring and fall!

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Sorry you can't make it - Family First.

There are only two yes's for the Asheville Hiking Meetup Group so far. It's temping because it's ten minutes away from my home

    Message from the park website:
Due to the recent ice and wind storms most of the park trails are impassable at this time with downed trees and snow/ice. Use of the higher elevation trails is strongly discouraged. Please use extreme caution on any trail, and turn around as soon as you encounter dangerous conditions.
As of February 12th, High Schoals Falls Loop Trail, Hemlock Nature Trail, River Trail, Little River Trail and Turkey Ridge Trail have been cleared of trees. Upper Falls and Shinny Creek Campsites are accessible. Travel on all other trails is not recommended until further notice.
Going to have to check really well for widowmakers.

Here's a Park map. There are two ways to get to Upper Falls... you can take the boardwalk trail (expect lots of stairs) next to the falls, or you can take the trail.

BTW, I'm planning on being there!

The trip is sounding more exciting...I'll make sure the microspikes are packed. Thanks for the park map Patrick. We will leave Saturday a.m. and it's a 2-2.5 hour drive, so when do you plan on hiking?
Also, like at Uwharrie, if you have a GPS coord of the campsite that would be good...just remembered the last GPS coord you gave was not in this country! hehehe
