i picked up these speakers for possible solo trips - they sound great and pack very small. Also you only have to use 1 speaker at a time, which means you can play one until the battery dies, then use the other.

i will be conducting a batter test soon.
    Whoa! Those look pretty nifty...

Hey Folks sorry for not checking back sooner! I've only tested the crank charger, I haven't done a complete recharge yet. I'll be on the AT for a week next month and will have a complete review then. I'm planning to run the crank off and on while laying around in the evenings. You do have to get it going at a decent rate and it wears on the arms before too long. But my plan is to KEEP the iPhone charged instead of doing a long recharge. I've used that AA recharger and a solar panel charger before. The solar one I had was very unreliable and I didn't like keeping plenty of AA batteries around. I'll make a post about my AT hike next month and let y'all know how the charging goes.

You guys got me thinking, and knowing that I'm not the quickest one around, others have gotten there before me. So a quick search has found some great ideas, which I will be trying soon for my MP3 player. Here's some links for you to look at:

Small, easy, cheap, and if you pair them with 4 rechargable AAs, then you can strap it to your backpack to charge all day long, then quickly charge up your player as you eat supper and do some chores, and enjoy the evening with music/movies.

    Just a thought.

I am known in my circle of friends as the one that watches movies on his ipod while hanging. I wondered how many others there were. I usually rent the 99 cent rentals of the week from itunes. I have the classic, but the screen seems plenty big enough for me.

    Ipod nano

A few months ago I just fancied getting out so was solo , Thought i will take my ipod nano along with a few movies so i am not just sitting there on my own.

Trying to watch something on a 1in screen is interesting

Deliverance is not a good movie choice for someone alone in a very large wood miles from civilisation

I am sure you can guess the rest , not the best nights sleep

Maybe we should start a hammock forums recommended watching list

    Ryobi Tek4 Portable Power supply

Just saw this in Home Depot yesterday ... looks like a potential solution for running cell phones, iPods or the like. Give some impressive figures ... but still haven't found reviews yet.

    Good find!

Be advised, lithium ion batteries do poorly in the cold (they self discharge as their internal resistance increases). This is true for this recharger as well as for your cell phone and other toys.

When in < 40*F or so, Keep them WARM (close to your body) or they die quickly.

I use a "freeloader" , comes with all the standard phone/ mp3 / ipod sockets but has solar panels to charge the pack , I am sure they do a rucksack mounted larger panel and additional battery packs are available

I find the solar is fine for a charge top up or just to extend the life but it needs a good charge from a USB plug to have any sort of life
