I've crushed carbon fiber arrow shafts. Aluminum seem to work well though.

I think I'll try the aluminum arrow shafts and the slurpee straws. They seem to be the most popular.
If you are using the toggle in a marlin spike hich the toggle is just holding the knot together and little weight is being put on the toggle, so CF or aluminum will work. If you are slipping the toggle into a loop on the tree strap there is a large amount of force being put on the toggle, that CF arrows are not designed for, so you should use aluminum.
Does using straps vs. ropes make a difference in what toggle I should use? I'm currently using a climbing rope to attach to the tree and I always seem to crush my aluminum arrow shafts. Although there from really old cheap arrows so maybe I need to find some that are a little thicker.
I found a fishing pole in the bushes by my office several weeks ago. Cut two 3" sections and works great. They weight 5g each.
