Hello From Lower Hudson Valley, NY

    Hello Everyone,

Thank you for this great forum.

While I have not yet pulled the trigger on my camping hammock I do have a few things sitting in the Cart at Warbonnet Outdoors. I am looking at the warbonnet Blackbird Double Layer 1.1, and the HG Phoenix 40. The tarp is on hold until funds allow, and I am not really sure what would be best for at this point.

I have always been a tent camper and started reading more and more about Hammock camping. It really seems like an awesome way to enjoy the outdoors without being "inside" a tent.

My hiking is currently relegated to the Lower Hudson Valley do to work constraints. We hike a lot on the AT, Bear Mountain, Harriman,
Ward Pound Ridge and Fahnstock. I don't know of many nice places to camp in the Lower Hudson Valley of NY because most of my camping was done in Utah and Colorado when I was younger.

If anyone has some good suggestions for camping in my area I would love to hear about them. I will need to find places to use my new found set-up. As always, being a newbie in this field, if anyone has any suggestions and advice I would love to hear them as well.

I have gotten thus far by reading all your great info here, and hope to one day be able to contribute some helpful tips as well.

    Thanks Again,

    Becks

Funny! I thought it was a trip report. You've found a great place to hang.

Hi and welcome... from NJ. We are planning on getting out to Harriman soon. The Catskills aren't that far from you either.

Becks, welcome! You might check out a group hang or meet up with a local (to you) forum member to check out some gear before you go all in on a purchase. I'd be more inclinded to the WB XLC than the WBBB.

Welcome from Strasburg, PA. Like others have said it's always nice to go to a hang or two before pulling the trigger on gear with the cost of it.

Welcome from north GA, You may like to try camping and hiking in Haines falls NY, North lake state campground. My wife and I camped there a few times over the years when we lived in NY, there is a nice trail along the ridge looking over the Hudson valley. I remember it was a awesome view.

Welcome, from the District of Columbia. If I may suggest, you could always use the funds to get a tarp right away, and then save for the top quilt. In the meantime you can use your sleeping bag as a makeshift top quilt. That way you can still get out there and hang instead of waiting around for a tarp.

Also, and I think a lot of hangers will agree, if you only have the funds for one and have to choose between top or under quilt, I'd go underquilt every time.
