Straps vs. Ropes

When I ordered my BB, I asked Brandon to include both strap and rope hanging kits since I wasn't clear what I wanted to use. For the first half-dozen hangs, I wimped out and used the straps thinking it'd be the least painful way to figure out what worked.

I just returned from a two-night solo weekend trip in which I manned-up and took along only the rope hanging option. To my great delight, it's REALLY simple and much lighter than the long strap/'biner combo. The slipped buntline knot in the strap's tri-ring is super easy and very effective way of hanging. Overall, I'm a convert to the rope & strap combo, partly because its lighter but mainly because I think it's simpler ("KISS" principle).

I can also report that the maiden voyage of my Yeti UQ was VERY effective in the windy low 40 degrees (Fahrenheit).

I'm on the list for a BB and I elected to get the straps at Brandon's suggestion. I agreed because I have whoopy slings ready and waiting and I figured having a strap option couldn't be a bad thing. I'm honestly just excited to get it home so I can try them both out!

To me the straps are well worth the weight penalty. I like the simplicity of them, and also knowing I can wrap around as big of a tree as I want, without being limited by the length of my tree huggers.

Hanging my Blackbird is so quick - snap two biners, pull the straps to the right height, tie the half hitches. I actually originally had the line, and decided tying knots was too much hassle, even with the slipped buntline.


I also use Figure 9's on my tarps, so I'm a gadget-oriented guy, I guess If I can avoid knot-tying, I do.

Adjustable webbing suspension: ~7.7oz (including ringbuckles) (2) 14' pieces of webbing with loop in one end;
Line/straps: ~4.5oz (2) 5.5' straps and (2) 7.5' lines

Of course, you have to add the weight of the caribiners or Dutch Clips for the webbing/strap option. I always carry some extra Amsteel Blue ('bout 30 feet) as part of my "just in case" gear.

I like the simplicity of the rope vs strap also. So a slip buntline hitch and off we go! Tonights my first hang in my new BB. (Had a HH which I had been using for the past couple of years which may have something to do also with staying with the rope setup.).

My "just in case" Amsteel is 7/64". The rope for the hammock suspension is the stock rope that came with the BB (whatever that is...Brandon??)
