Thumbs up Nicknames-how do you get them?

Just curious if there is a process for this and how the whole nickname things goes. I am a den leader for cub scouts and thought of giving them all nicknames for our hick this spring. but more importantly SHUG is awesome!!! just gotta say man. love the videos!

The best trail names pick themselves, in my opinion. When my youngest son started coming out hiking with me and a couple of friends, he wanted to know how people end up with their trail names. I promised him that his trail name would find him that weekend.

So we're sitting around the campfire having dinner, and one of our group is notoriously cheap. I mentioned that he buys his meals at dollar stores, where almost all the food has exceeded its shelf life.

My son said, "What's shelf life?" A trail name was born. He is now officially known as Shelf Life.

Mine actually came about from my military. Apparently, when I get really excited I get a bit high pitched and bounce around a lot. Given my long, narrow face, Beaker from the muppets just became synonymous.

Nick names or trail names are fun. Just be careful when the kids tell their moms what their trial names are they don't get upset over something that is for fun.

Overprotective moms can raise some hell. This is from experience. The kids loved it and picked their own names. Mom didn't think it was wise of me to allow that.

Gresh is what people call me online and in real life. It's an acronym, meaning Get Really Elevated Sleeping (in) Hammocks.

...actually my IRL last name is Gresham and folks just shortened it.
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.

If you are referring to trail names, some people are given them and some people take their own. I started my AT hike with Miguel which is what my hispanic wife calls me but was given the trail name of Cat in The Hat by another hiker because of the Kangol Pork Pie hat I wore while hiking. It's all good but given trail names are usually a bit more fun due to the story behind them.

"The trail was exceptionally muddy today and my footwear leaves my feet exposed to the mud which they are caked in (I haven't wash my feet yet today). It's here that I earn my trail name Mudsocks from the Lightning Rod Sisters."

I've always considered the following for trail names:
    1. They have to be given by someone else. You can't/shouldn't pick your own.
    2. The name will reflect an experience that happens on the trail/camp out.

My son received his first trail name Spider Bite. While on a backpacking trip with his troop, he was making a a very vocal point that he was going to take the right path around a giant rock formation in the middle of the trail instead of following the rest of the troop to the left; when all of a sudden mid sentence he walks face first into a spider web which got into his mouth. From that experience Spider Bite was born.
His trail name now is Wondering Turtle. This name was conceived when he "wondered" from the Sheltowee Trace we were hiking one summer and got lost for a couple of hours. KIDS
