    Cool Bury length?

I've been trying to make various different suspensions and there one thing that is starting to play on my mind...

Namely, how long should a bury be?

I see examples of 3"-4" burys on eye splices with brummel locks, and 4"-6" burys on whoopie sling eyelets, to 7"-10" buries in the adjustable parts of UCRs and whoopies.

As far as I've been told, the strength of a suspension is only as good as it's weakest point.

So, why would I put a 10" bury in the middle of a UCR that has eye splices of only 4" buries?

If 4" is good enough at either end, why do i have to waste al that space in the middle?

I'm not the expert that others are here but- the 4" bury is " on eye splices With Brummel Locks" therefore the bury is more to dispose of the tag end neatly. The 7"- 10" bury is to ensure that the adjustable function of the suspension does not move once it is set- no Brummel lock involved thus the need for the longer bury. If you check the rope manufactures web site @ splicing their product, they will have info. on load and bury requirements. Also in the forums under "suspension systems, ridgelines, and bugnets" in the stickies are a number of great tutorials on splicing.

The bury on a fixed eye should be sized to do the work while the locked brummel insures that it can't back out under no load conditions...think packing and unpacking. However, the locked brummel is also contributing an additional amount of hold.

The outer section of an adjustable bury on a whoopie sling is evenly pulled from both ends maximising it's holding ability on the inner bury. On a UCR the outer bury is only pulled strongly from one end so the outer bury needs to be longer since one end of it isn't contributing as much holding power.

There are recommended bury and taper lengths from Sampson. These lengths can be less and will hold you fine but just be aware that there are optimal lengths and you can make them shorter at your own risk.

Kinda depends on the rope and use. I use 4" buries with Lash-It but 6" buries with Amsteel because it's supporting more weight. Thinner guy lines don't need the extra bury length.

Sampson rope recommends 21 times rope diameter. Here's a calculator for different types of rope.

Buries on eye splices are supposed to be lock stitched. I believe part of the reason whoopies have a longer bury is for an extra margin of safety since they can be wiggled loose under certain circumstances.

Close but no cigar. A fid is 21 times the rope diameter. For an Amsteel whoopie sling, Samson recommends 2 fids with a locked brummel for the eye splice and 3-1/2 fids for the adjustable bury.

You are right - I was going from memory which has failed me before. I had the '21' right - just didn't apply it correctly...
