I did -11*F last winter and was toasty warm. The best trick I have found for these frigid temps is a garlington insulator. It acts as a weathershield too.

    My setup from last winter:

    claytor hammock
8x10 siltarp set up as a baker's hut to block the 15-20mph winds off the reservoir
    -20*TNF down bag
    walmart ccf (egg crate one)
    walmart 3/8 in ccf
    truck sunshade
2 garbage bags filled w/air ala garlington
    poncho rigged as garlington insulator

I was so warm in this, I know I could have gone way lower.

DuctTape- how did you layer your set-up? Any pads in the hammock or between pocho and hammock?

I just picked up a SS undercover to stuff stuff in for added degrees and a willys poncho liner to hang as an UQ if needed. Would I put the inflated bags over or under the SS open cell pad/SB?

the 2 ccf's were in the pad pocket of the claytor as was the sunshade

between the poncho and hammock bottom was the 2 garbage bags filled with air (filled is the wrong word, there was barely any air).

Forgot about the pocket in the Claytor.

So I'd want the bags under my ocf pad. Thanks man. Options are good. Especially for the weight and cost of a couple garbage bags.

yeah. I always carry a couple of garbage bags in my pack and since I have a poncho all the time, I know that I am always prepared for an unprepared 20* drop in temp.

note: the bags are under the hammock... between it and the poncho.

You might find something of interest in this thread, considering you will use a HHSS undercover.

Because you don't have a pad pocket in a HH, you might consider a 4 oz Speer SPE, plus it is lighter than a dbl layer.

Thanks for the pointers Billy. A couple large bags will be in my pack for my Oct. trip in the Whites. I hope to experiment more before then. I'll keep you all posted.
