I am really having trouble understanding the purpose of all these suspension setups. What advantage is there with all the rings, prussics, etc? I use webbing on either side. One side I tie a fixed knot and on the other side I tie an adjustable knot (trucker hitch, i think). My tarp has two guy lines that I attach to the same trees and stakes down to the ground at another 6 points. This setup has work flawlessly so far.
What am I missing here?
Nothing. There is a lot of 'tinker factor' involved, for it's own sake.
A few are specifically designed to be light weight, for the gram-weenie backpackers among us.

I think there are a lot of different ways that 'work' and there is nothing wrong with any of them. When I first started hanging, I too just tied things off with fixed adjustable knots. I started converting when I bought my first non-DIY hammock. I have since found that rings allow me to quickly and easily make fine adjustments that I could never make with the knot approach.Originally Posted by XtrailratedJ

The equipment just makes thing easier, at the cost of some weight. It's about what people think is convenient for them. I used to carry only cord and huggers, just like the HH setup, even on my homemade ones...but now I carry a little more gear so my entire hammock setup is two biner clicks and two pulls of some webbing. All takes about 15 seconds if I want it to.
Other times I still like to go lightweight and just carry the Air Core with HH huggers. Just depends on what style I'm in the mood for.
Plus I just like to tinker.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
While I like knots, I don't want to deal with them in the mornings when my hands don't really work all that great. With the ring set-up I just yank on the loose end of my slipknot back-up and unclip a biner. I don't even tie my tarp lines anymore. I just wrap them around the stake a bunch of times and stick the whole thing in the ground; hasn't failed me yet.
Trust nobody!
It's a lot quicker with rings/straps, and I'm finding that having just a couple of really long straps lets me hang in less than optimal locations without a lot of fuss or climbing in poison oak to tie the rope to the strap. I also have a little trouble visualizing things before I hang, so easy adjustments after it's hung to raise the hammock or re-center it make me happy. And, I'm impossible with knots. If I had to rely on knots for anything, I'd have to hire a boy scout to follow me around.
It is like a hamburger ...... you can eat it plain or add condiments, onion, lettuce, pickle, tomato, relish, chutney ..... etc.
Simple or packed.
Options .... not necessary but there if you like tinkering about.

Are you hanging off the crossrails from the back ?
What kind of vehicle and roof rack ?
We are very interested in this for quick minimal opportunity setups.
( quick picnic area naps when on road trips )
Really, all the different suspensions have the same purpose, but each offers differences that might appeal to us. It could be about weight, speed, ease, or even (and especially) the appeal of the 'new toy'.
Sometimes one suspension might not work as well for one person due to physical limitations they might have, or the size of the trees for example.
For me personally, right now I'm going through a diy phase, and I want to try ALL the suspension systems, not only to see what I like best, but just so I can see what the heck everyone else is so excited about!
It's loads of fun for a lot of us!

There is a link to my JeepForum thread in there too with a little more info.
Its is just a mount that uses the hitch on my Jeep (I have a tow hitch and an accessory hitch I incorporated into the bumper for purposes such as this). I plan on making a modular system so I can use it as a hammock mount or a grill mount for tailgating.
