My cheap DIY setup for 0°F

    Hello everybody!

I thought I would share my 0° DIY setup as an encouragement to newbies that it can be done, DIY and on the cheap, if you are patient. The entire setup in the pics cost approximately $70, and was comfortable for me in 0° weather this last week. I had my kit setup all week through our ice and snow storm. As you will see in the pics, I have a DIY ripstop gathered end hammock with whoopie suspension and ridgeline organizer, two truck size windshield bubble things, DIY baffled down underquilt, DIY JCP down topquilt, unmodified poncho liner overcover, unmodified HeatSheet overcover, U-shaped pillow, and DIY Winter Dream rainfly. The entire kit comes in at 12 lbs, which is a little disappointing but I will keep trying to improve it.

Love it. Nothing better than using you DIY skills to get out and hanging in the cold which in then hones your skills at setup and how it all works together. Great work.

Awesome! I still use my windshield reflector for added warmth, they may be a little bulky but they weigh nothing. Good on you for showing how a guy could get in to hammock camping on the cheap.

Very nice. I would like to see how you plan to make the system lighter. 12 lbs. is quite heavy.

Haha 12lbs for a winter rig is great man. Especially for the price point. You know what they say about bulk weight and money. You can have two. Keep doing your thing. Most people don't get out in those serious temps, good on you. Great gear too.

Do you have any suggestions based upon your cold-weather rig? I welcome feedback and pictures.

Well done. It rarely gets that cold around here, but it's nice to know if it did I could use your gear list to try to make it through.

Ya done good - $70 and 0F is a real accomplishment. 12 lbs isn't bad either. The poncho liner is the only thing I see that might weigh more than the insulating efficiency it provides. Maybe a sock/pod could replace the two top covers (made from sleeping bags and under the ridgeline).
Other than this year, how often does Tenn see 0F? 15F is rare here in Northern Va (other than the last couple years).

I agree on the overcover, it will be the next project. I just had those things at hand for an impromptu overcover and wanted to test with one, having never used an overcover before. Now I'm convinced.
0° is fairly unusual here... So I was excited to test my gear!
I will say I do not like the pod concept... It looked so cool until I tried it. Too confining for me.
