Fronkenstein Bug Net and Hammock Sock

I needed a bug net to get ready for summer, and I liked the ease of Fronkey's design. I didn't like not being able to leave it in the Black Bishop Bag if I wanted to, though. So I came up with this twist. It's probably been done before, but I couldn't find an example.

Here's the Fronkey on my hammock:

Here's the Fronkey half-way on. I just left a hole that I can shut with some cord and a cord lock.

Lastly, for winter camping, I decided to try a sock. I had a bunch of left-over ripstop from Walmart and a small amount of nanoseum, so I thought, "Why not?"

I sort of made it up as I went along. I'm impressed by the added warmth. In my 56 degree basement, it's almost enough by itself to keep me cozy. I didn't realize how warm it was inside the sock until I opened it to get out and felt the blast of cold air. It needs tie-outs or something to keep if farther off of my face. But then again, I might also put some Velcro tabs along the window so I can shut it on those really cold nights. I'll have to play with it and see how much condensation I would get. Any advice about that?

Been thinking about doing a vented sock myself. Have the noseeum already, just need the fabric. What is the width of the fabric before sewing? Did you just sew 60" fabric into a tube?

Yep. Just got some myself to do this exact thing.

Now all I need is some spare time.

I started off with something like 60", but like I said, I made it up as I went along. The original channel I sewed for the cord to shut it was too skinny and was a pain to get sealed. I took some red rip stop I had and made a larger channel, then sewed it right onto the old channel. I also felt like the material was too tight to the UQ, so I cut out a skinny hexagon (like a two sided arrow) and added that to the belly. If you saw this thing up close, you would shake your head at the amateur hour production. Like I said, though, it works great now! If I were you, I would look up a pattern from someone who knows what they're doing.

Very nice idea on the bug net. Best of both the Fronkey and the tube style. Wish I had thought of combining the two when I was making my new bug net a couple months ago. I usually need a net no matter what here in Florida, but sometimes for simply lounging, it would be nice to push it out of the way.

What's the finished weight on your net?

I'll weigh it and get back to you. I'm assuming it is in the same ballpark as any other Fronkey style.
