    Dogs and hammocks

Thought it might be interesting to see what other folks do .. especially with smaller dogs on camping trips. I use to .. sigh ... tent camp with my beagle back in the day. Other than his snoring and occasional passing of gas it wasn't too bad to have old Henry in the tent.

These days I have a Cairn (rescue dog we got over a year ago) that will remind you of a drunken Scotsman .. ready to take on all comers ... but he's a great guy even with a slight Napolean complex. He loves to hang with me in the hammock at home and enjoys his naps there watching for killer squirrels.

Now that snake season is winding down ... I'm considering taking him camping with me ... so I was wondering ... anyone camp with their dogs small or large in their hammocks? Any interesting experiences? Any suggestions?

He's already with his Linville Gorge, Gorge Rat shirt! Even got his pack ready!

This thread discussed alot of folks opinions and techniques. I love dogs and if you don't mind carrying the extra food and water, then take 'em. Little doggy backpacks are cool, too...another excuse to buy more gear. Like we need an excuse.

If your dog does sleep with you, be careful about possible poison ivy that the dog may have been in contact with. Some parks do have rules about dogs and leashes, so know there rules before you go. I don't think where you hike (Linville) would be a problem.

Cleaning up after Fido does his business would be good too. I would hate to step in a pile on the trail. Living in Michigan, the big lakes are a great place for folks to let their dogs run wild, but too many folks don't clean up after them. So now they say dogs are not allowed or they have to be on a 6 foot leash. Have you ever played fetch with a dog on a 6-foot leash.

Good looking pooch, thanks for recuing him(her). We do the same.

Dang don't you just hate it when someone starts a duplicate thread!?!

Did a search but apparently gave up with this lousy connection over here during the day from the factory. Thanks for the link.

My beagle Henry taught me about poison ivy and dogs on camping trips ... had that stuff all over my right shoulder, neck and cheek. Henry was a nuzzler at night.

I used to take my husky out on day hikes all the time. Now I adopted another one and 2 is just too much for me to handle. I can walk them but with a pack on, they can easily drag me down the trail if they see a squirrel or something. I need a sleed for the snow they are working dogs. Here is a youtube video of them singing.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtZF8h03KR4

Youtube is totally blocked over here ... have to watch that when I return in October. Just like Shug's video ... can't wait to see it.

Here's my boy Spencer and my daughter in the $25 ENO I bought from a guy last month. From his mid yawn picture you can tell he's pretty much a dedicated hammocker already!

Ha ... Sassy looks like she's solved the question of using a pad in the hammock or not!
    Great shots!
