I believe Catevarie and some others put something over their face to help with dry mouth. The breath moistens the fabric and in turn you inhale air moistened by the damp fabric.

I'm very tempted to try it with a Buff as I often wakeup with horribly dry mouth.

If my nose gets cold I cannot sleep at all, so yes I burrow quite often. I also wear a serius ultraclava. My topquilt has a band of waterproof fabric around the opening so I don't worry about condensation.

I do it sometimes, especially when it gets really cold. I used to feel uncomfortable doing this before but I'm used to it now. I do however leave a small space for me to be able to breathe without any problems.

When I first started hammock camping, I thought this quilt from Sierra Designs would be the best, because it is designed to allow you to both burrow and vent - if desired. I ended up not doing it because of price and temperature rating, and I have a secondhand quilt from the for sale forums instead. I've often been tempted to see if one of the cottage manufacturers here could copy that design for me, because I do think it is ingenious - but that requires $, and I don't want to get anyone in trouble for infringement or anything like that either.

The Sierra Designs quilt would work for a back sleeper, but wouldn't be adaptable for a side sleeper. When you roll to the side, either you rotate the quilt so that your head is still in the hood opening and you back is completely exposed, or keep the quilt on top of you and your head moves out of the hood area.

I do when the temperature is cool enough to allow me to cover my face. I too keep a vent to allow fresh air in my lungs, and to keep condensation out, otherwise I feel like I'm suffocating. I tend to curl up when it's really cold as well.
People have always given me a hard time for sleeping like this...

I too like the Sierra Designs quilt (https://www.sierradesigns.com/produc...t-800-2-season), but quickly saw like you did that if I turn on my side I might expose my back. And the temp rating is on the light side too. Still, the hood design is clever, and its arm and hand pockets are neat. Currently I'm using a 20-degree North Face Furnace mummy bag unzipped and spread on top. I like its foot box. I also like how its width allows it to continually tuck itself beneath me as I roll even a little from side to side, even down under my legs during the night, while still allowing enough wiggle room in the elbow, thigh and knee areas. What I don't like is that mummy hood being slightly off to one side and constantly finding its way during the night to get up in the way of my mouth and nose and interfering with my unimpeded breathing. So that Sierra quilt's hood with the face slit keeps mocking my existence and keeping me up at night romancing its utility. That got me to thinking...

Sew two seams across the base of the bag's hood and cut it off between the seams. That yields me a wide quilt with a foot box. Then sew Velcro centered across the top of the back of the sleeping bag and more Velcro across the inside base of the hood. Velcro the hood on the bag directly above my face and modify the hood to be like the hood of the Sierra Designs quilt with the face slit in it. Facing into the centered hood I get my face and head covered, while still having the extra width I like, AND a face slit from which to breathe through unimpeded.

Most probably though I'll do what I normally do and just keep thinking about it and do nothing. And waking up smothered by that **** hood all night. That 3 asterisk-4 asterisk hood.

Great minds think alike :-). I have had similar experiences and thoughts about redesign of my mummy bag.
