What books pertaining to hammock camping, backpacking, camping, woodcraft, campcraft, kayak/canoe camping, bicycle camping, trail food, camp cooking, etc... would you consider essential to the "well educated" hanger's library?

I dont' know about "essential", but I just finished "Beyond Backpacking" which was a really good read with loads of good ideas.
I also just read "A Walk in the Woods" which, although a little 'preachy' on Green issues, was a really fun read and had some laugh-out-loud funny parts in it. It's about a writer who decides to hike the Appalachian trail to "reconnect" with America. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned a lot too.

Walden by Henry David Thoreau.
Nothing resonates his message of: "Simplify!Simplify!Simplify!" like swinging in the breeze.
"How to S... in the woods" ... well maybe not essential but the wife got it for me for Christmas once and it's a hilarious bit of good information. And it definitely attracts attention sitting in a bookshelf!
"Nineteen Eight-four" & "U.S. Armed Forces Survival Manual"

When I first started backpacking, I researched gear in:
The Backpacker's Handbook by Chris Townsend. I still reference his ideas about backpacking.
The Complete Walker IV by Colin Fletcher/Chip Rawlins
The Thousand Mile Summer in Desert and High Sierra by Colin Fletcher inspires me to walk. (WorldCat link will locate it in a local library. I donate to the local Friends of the Library a portion of what I would have spent on books I might only read once. I think of it as a "rental" fee.)
Hammock Camping by Ed Speer
Trail Life by Ray Jardine. Successor to Beyond Backpacking; haven't read it yet.
TGO Magazine, a UK periodical (The Great Outdoors). Not on my bookshelf exactly but I have an electronic subscription, available at Zinio.

I've been partial to Backpacker Magazine's "Everyday Wisdom." Has some useful and not always obvious tips. Much to be said for "Waldon," too.

Two great books full of general backpack, survival, plants and shelter facts.
Ashleys book of knots, good for rope tying instruction.
The Bible.
Not in that particular order.

how bout "hammock camping" by Mr. ED Speer
oops, already listed
A similar thread either here on HF or over on the dark-side (Whiteblaze.net) someone recommended The Appalachian Trail Reader by David Emblidge. Well worth the $8.50 I paid and I'm only on page 42!
