    Tree Strap Length

I am not sure if this is where this should go or not but I am hammocking the JMT this summer and am trying to find out what length tree straps I should bring for the trees in that area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A lot depends on what type of suspension you have. Whoopie's? Cinch buckles?

No reason 10' straps wouldn't be good. I've researched the JMT but never been there. 10' can go around some pretty big trees. Before I went to whoopie hooks, that's what I carried.

I carry 10 foot straps here in Texas and only once had a problem going around a weirdly shaped tree. What saved me is the waist belt I use that is made from 1" tree strap and a cinch buckle. I was able to add that to one end and get to sleep that night.

You and your damned belt!!! I'm stealing this idea! Just letting you know as a courtesy to a fellow hanger.

I use 15 ft tree straps, and use one to measure the distance between the trees i plan to hang on. If the gap is longer than the strap, i know I will be using poles to put up my suspension.

I'd rather have it and not need it. The alternative is cold and uncomfortable.

Another solution to your situation could be to convert to a whoopie hook suspension system. When using the hooks, the whoopie sling is attached to the tree strap and the sling can be used to make up for a tree strap that doesn't quite make it around the tree.

An example can be seen at around 36 seconds into this video.
