Cuben Fiber Tarp Perfomed Fantastic in the Rain, But...

...man, was it loud!! I spent two nights this past weekend in Flash Flood condition downpour in the Ozark National Forest... this was my first opportunity to use the CF3 Winter Palace tarp in a significant rain storm. It was great for keeping me bone dry in the hammock, and had plenty of dry area for my pack and gear, but it was like trying to sleep in a popcorn popper! Rain on my silnylon tarps has always lulled me to sleep, but I wouldn't recommend using your CF tarp in a significant rain without ear plugs.

Good to have different gear for different conditions!

I know what you mean. It's like rain on a tin roof, but I actually like that sound. Also, before Cuben, I was using an even louder Spinnaker tarp!

I don't even notice the noise anymore. Then again, I never thought it was loud in the first place!

Yeah they are a bit loud in the rain. I had one stretched way too tight on a night of ridiculous high winds once and my tarp was making reed sounds. You know those little helicopter seed things that fall off the maple tress, how when we were kids we put them in between our thumbs and blew across them Yeah, that annoying sound! It was driving me and a couple people hanging nearby absolutely crazy, finally I had to get up and readjust my tarp. Nobody got any sleep that night anyway.

Wow! I just had a great idea for the next group hang. We'll pitch all the Cuben tarps in one area and tune them to different pitches so they harmonize!
    Hang of the singing tarps!

I've never noticed the noise in my HG Cuben tarp. However, I normally sleep with ear plugs.

If you group hang, the rain noise might drown out the snoring sound from all the fellow hangers. Usuall I just wear ear plugs

The assurance of being waterproof helps me tolerate the noise.
Maybe more trips in the rain will help me to adjust.
