Thumbs up Nylon D 1.0 softness!

WOW! I just got in some NylonD 1.0 and I'm pretty blown away by the softness. I've made an argon 90 top and underquilt and thought they were soft, but this NylonD is incredible. I got it to make another underquilt, but now I'm thinking of doing a top quilt just so I can touch it!

Since the Argon 90 and NylonD 1.0 are very similar fabric-wise (correct me if I'm wrong) and both come with DWR, then is it the calendering that makes the Argon feel different?

Anybody make top or bottom quilts with this and have any issues? I know it's ideal for hammocks, but wondered if there's a good reason I shouldn't use it for a quilt, e.g. not windproof enough for UQ etc? Also, any ideas about using down with nylonD?

I'm always excited to get in new dutch gear and this was no exception!

I made a 6.6 oz 11 foot hammock out of NylonD. Yes it is soft. You almost forget it's there when you lay in it. As far a quilt material, I don't know. It's not calendared so down is a no go. Would probably work for a synthetic, but it almost breathes too much where you lose some thermal efficiency. Argon has a different weave that works better for a quilt.

Thanks for chiming in! I figured down was out, but you never know what people on here have tried!

So maybe too breathable for uq, but that'd probably ok for top then, huh? I sweat a good amount so thought about a CS 2.5 as a three season TQ.

Any others have ideas or projects you've made?

Guess it depends on where you live. 2.5 and extra breathable might be a little cold depending on your UQ or pad except in summer or if you had a netted hammock.

I absolutely agree, heycorb. Being in Georgia, it's warmer than most locales and basically always requires a bugnet (mosquitos are already terrorizing)!

The are made from different types of threads. It is fine for synthetic quilts. I think the ARGON 90 has a better hand to it though. NylonD is really designed to be a Light weight hammock body.

Thanks for chiming in, Dutch! I really enjoy my argon stuff, I think I was just pleasantly surprised by the nylonD. Do you think it's too breathable for a UQ or TQ?

Well I would still stick with ARGON but synthetic insulation blocks with pretty well itself. You can always got ARGON on the outside and NylonD 1.0 on the inside.

I agree on the softness. It's a little less "slippery" than argon and I think it would make for a good pillow (case).

I like the pillow idea, awilhelm. I guess no one else is/was as surprised by the softness! I'm thinking I may do just the inner layer of my CS top quilt with it...then again people used to just use regular 1.1 for top quilts so maybe I could get away with having it for inner and outer!
