Great article, Jerry! I've done this a few times myself. For me, these trips tend to be somewhat spontaneous decisions. I usually don't decide to go until a few hours before I head out!

I have to admit though, that this is much easier for some people than others. I live in city that has a lot of parks, but none of them allow camping. That means I have to drive 30-45 minutes to the nearest campgrounds. Minimum. Plus those campgrounds usually get booked full during the warmer half of the year. Not that I don't winter camp, but I like to get out more often in the warmer months.

I also have the disadvantage that I don't have a backyard to hang in (I live in an apartment complex), so I can't even do a sub 12 hour backyard hang. Its frustrating, but you do what you can!

my friends and i routinely get the idea, late in the evening, sometimes after drinking, to go on night hikes and camp out. sometimes the whole trip is under 12 hours.

And to think I've been dialing ex-girlfriends all this time!

Looks like most of us have been doing this already, I live pretty close to a lake and stay out there pretty often, fishing and camping all night; then head home the next day to clean fish!

Great idea! I set a goal a while back, to go camping at least once a month, even if its just an overnight hang in the back yard. I havnt made that goal, but its a great idea! Somthing to shoot for next year! How many nights a year do you guys usually hang? Do you keep track?
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Fantastic idea! Now where can I go hang that's less than an hour from San Diego? Hmmm.....

I can see it now: The first annual SanDiego S24O... 40 whacked-out hangers, 1 night...

Any volunteers to find a location and coordinate? I'm in for any Saturday night...
