I am new to the hammock camping and was wondering if you could modify a old sleeping bag for a underquilt. Would it do just as well as one you bought. I live in Mississippi and our winters do not get to cold. If you can does anyone have suggestions on how to.

Short answer is yes, with scissors and a sewing machine you could potentially turn an old sleeping bag into an under quilt.
I've also seen people cut a hole in the foot of their sleeping bag and slide their suspension through it to create a kind of peapod.
Baring these routes a simple foam pad will provide the thermal break needed as well.
I'm sure the most common response to this question is save some money and get a true hammock under quilt. And as someone who put it off and just got one. I have to say it is the best option. It fits better, adjusts better, and packs better.
Also I believe diygearsupply.com has a guide relating to underquilt building... Could be wrong though as its not loading on ym phone
