    Free goodies!

Picked up some oldie but goodies from my wifes uncles today, a pair of OLD down military mummy bags.

Surprised at the condition, I was worried mice or mold had ruined them when he said he had a few we could have. One does have a broken zipper, and one has a small tear on the inside I had to sew, but the zipper doesn't matter for use as a TQ anyway.

Pretty nice bags, cool nostalgic value. Little heavy, ok, alot heavy at 6-7lbs, but we got them for our teenage son to use on our next trip anyway. He qualified for state last season in cross country, so the extra weight will be good to slow him down!

I think we might try putting them in the dryer for a bit to see if it fluffs em up more.

I remember my 1st camping trip whenot I was 9 or 10. I didn't have any gear so my friends dad, a marine let me use his. They do weigh a ton but are very warm. I remember everyone complaining about how cold it got and I was sweating.

Great find and the price is even better. 7 lbs is fine if you're driving to your camp site, or to slow down the young'ens.

Threw one in the dryer today, seems to have fluffed it up some. I flopped one in a hammock for a test, gotta say, they seem really warm for the age and "loft". These would easily make great 25-30deg bags im sure. They are heavy tho, although they do seem to take up less space than the newer (MSS?) synthetic bags oddly enough. I think they seem alot warmer than the synthetic bag my friend left here. I couldnt get the newer synthetic bag small enough to fit his pack, but these old down ones seem to pack a good bit smaller. Although over 2x the size of a modern 20deg TQ, and ofc much heavier, but, can't beat free. The nostalgic factor is pretty cool though imo.

That is awesome...definitely worth the extra weight for the nostalgia. Congrats on finding those bags a new home where they'll get some use! They look like they're in great condition.
