Located 15 miles east of Grayling off M-72 on Chase Bridge Road, The Mason Tract Pathway offers a network of 11.5 miles of scenic trail winding along the bank of the south branch of the AuSable River. There is a lot of Canoe's on the river Week Ends; but it's a great River and the fishing is good.

I have not hiked the Manistee (yet!) so unable to compare it to the Jordan River Valley. I believe Piney Bridge (Ridge?) is the only campground. It makes a good 2 day overnight hike if you park and start at deadmans lookout and spend the night at Piney.

Too bad you have to stay at the campground. But I'd like to check this one out eventually.

I see the passport is required...I already had to pay $30 (non-resident) for another trip coming up, so maybe I can do this to make it feel like I didn't waste the money!

Waterloo-Pinckney rec areas...they have a linear trail that runs for 32 miles and has loops to lengthen your hike if you wish. The trailhead is at Portage lake near Chelsea and it ends at Silver lake in Pinckney. Nice elevation at the beginning.

Can't beat North Manitou Island. The whole island is back country camping. You can make your own route, and the views of Lake Michigan are amazing.
