    Winter Tarp Configuration

I recently bought a 10x12 Equinox ripstop nylon tarp from Campmor. Great tarp for the price. I expect to use this as my cold weather/winter tarp.

I'm playing around with my new tarp trying to decide which way to set it up. My two options are 10' ridgeline peak & 6' walls or 12' ridgeline peak & 5' walls... (I've not considered some form of diagonal set up). I plan on adding pull tabs/tie outs to the walls & replacing the standard grommets, so my final setup is important before modifying the tarp.

    Which way do you prefer?

Higher ridgeline/peak & walls or longer ridgeline & shorter walls?

My initial thoughts are setting up my hammock rig closer to the ground during winter but I don't think I want my tarp low enough that my hammock sag will be nearly on the ground.

Do you set up your winter tarp with the walls to the ground or walls a foot or two off the ground?

Do you use a standard "A-frame" setup or some other configuration?

I use a 12' ridgeline with a 5' wall height. I used it in 20* F weather with blowing wind and snow. I had no problems and stayed plenty warm. Personally, I'd rather have a longer ridge line and set the tarp a little closer to the top of the hammock (but not touching the ridge line).

At another set up, I had the tarp too high, but I piled dry leaves along the bottom and that stopped the wind and snow. In both set ups I never had the hammock too close to the ground. It was always around chair height.

It's my .02 worth, but go with the longer ridgeline.

Edit: if you look at the avatar, that's the set up on Trey Mountain on the AT in GA. I would have posted a link, but the computer's smarter than me and won't let me do it....never: mind beat the computer into submission

Got the same tarp ... love it. I've rigged it both ways ... but mostly long way across the ridge line. Here's how I rig it to enclose it. But this shot is too high off the ground. I put it about 3 inches off and I have plenty of ground clearance for my hammock.

Yea, that's how I do my winter rig. You will be amazed at the temp difference pulling the ends mostly closed like that will do.

So with your winter tarp, Do you use rigid guidelines or shockcord guidelines to stake it to the ground?

I've used rigid lines ... but have purchased some tubing to make my own "slack-taker-uppers" so to speak when I get back to the states.

Rigid lines for the "Regular" tie outs, shock cord loops for the "doors". The shock cord loops make it somewhat easier to get in / out. But at the temps I sometimes camp, the shock cord freezes, SOLID, & I may as well use rigid lines for then.

Note, my shock cords and the ones with the elastic tubing freezes wether they are wet or not. So, in Sub Zero temps. I just use solid most of the time

Sounds like good common sense to me!

I made up six of the green rubber tubing rigs ... about six inches long relaxed ... loops on either end. Put them in the freezer last night ... still stretchy this morning. I took the blonde's flower mister thing ... spritzed them with water ... kinda froze on contact ... stuck them back in. Was going to wait till I got home but since my daughter is there today ... had her pull them out and see what they did.

Her reports are the "crunchy ice fell of but they still stretch".

Guess this stuff will do at least in NC winter situations.

One thing I noticed making these things ... sure works the skin on your fingers stretching and tying these things off. Dang near got a blister on my thumb!
