    Hip Pain in the Hammock

So have a friend getting into the hammock world and he experienced not knee or shoulder pain but Hip pain in the hammock from sleeping. Any idea how or why? I know I read a post about this when I was dealing with knee issues but i didn't have hip problems so i just moved on by and for the life of me I cannot come back to it

Definitely sounds like a side sleeper. I'm a side sleeper in a bed, but back sleeper in a hammock. Tell him to try sleeping on his back.

Was the hammock material too thin for his weigh so it provided less support.

Possibly try a bridge hammock, or one with a wider lay? It could be that the hammock is too narrow, or the hang is too deep.

More than likely the hip flexor feeling a new stretch.
    It may pass in time.

having had a few aches and pains in my learning hangs i would also so stick with it for a few more hangs -
as Shug said new stretches on the body.. or and fairly common is a niggle/stressed muscle that can finnaly relax - and boom pain.

When I get weird leg pains I believe a good part of it is from exercise that I don't normally get. The hip pain could also be due to a ill fitting back pack or sitting in a camp chair for a period of time.

I dont think its the size of the hammock he is using a Skeeter Beeter from Grand Trunk which is almost an eleven foot hammock... He was sleeping on his back when he experienced the pain... Now granted he was thinking about switching to a full time hang and giving up on the bed but the pain stopped that idea. He said its more of a discomfort and when he lays down the he gets a good level hang but the degree of the hang may be too deep and he needs longer anchor points. he did say he is sold on the hammock when it comes to camping so that is a definite success..

He is a side sleeper in bed... SO am I but i prefer regular hammocks to bridge hammocks and sleep on my back then.

Another thought: recently I developed the by runners so dreaded piriformis syndrome, which from what I understand you can get merely from sitting a lot although you're not a runner. Sice the hammock fabric wraps the body, the slight pressure around teh buttock up to the hip/upper thigh presses on the inflamed muscle and causes pain on a bad night and inconvenience on a good. Could this be something? I now stretch the piriformis muscle specifically after each workout, and that has made it all but go away.
