    Prairie Travois Hammock Stand

This weekend at Hot Springs, there was talk about some kind of radial hammock stand that holds several hammocks. It reminded me of our discussion in this thread, based on the following sketch from Ashley's Book of Knots:

    I posted the following comment:

Slowhike said he would help me build this stand in my backyard.

I made a 1"=1' scale model using 23" arrow sections, and little 9" hammocks hung 6" up each pole, 12" apart. Next step requires math, to figure out how short the poles can be without risking collapse.

Since it's a three hammock stand, I guess we need another cohort.
Anyone want to help us make one of these?

If it works, we'll have to do a road trip to Arizona for field testing.

Guess that math is going to have to take into consideration the poles composition. If wooden poles one could start with say 20 footers and move the lashing down till you found the minimum sweet spot. Might be a cheap way to do a rough calculation on other materials too. Just thinking out loud ... sort of

This is what I've found on the radial-multiple-portable-hammock-stand. It must be the right one... inventor is Tom Hennessy.

The PDF at that link includes the attached drawing.

The Mast Company sells Aluminum Mast Sections and Telescoping Poles.

Dwyer Aluminum Mast Co. will sell a 2" extrusion only for $13/ft.

New windsurfer masts cost a lot of money, fiberglass or carbon!
However, there are a few on Craig's List. We'd probably need the taller ones... well over 500cm.

Maybe I can get to Delks in Asheboro and see what they have for mil-surplus aluminum poles.

Hmmm ... not sure I'd want to be hanging in a group that size ... kinda defeats the purpose of getting out on your own. A few snoring old farts like me could really create a problem that closed up!

Sitting here looking out of this office window ... what about bamboo poles 3 to 4 inches in diameter? Light weight ... stronger than hell. I know a place in our area back home a guy could harvest such ... just a thought.

Good idea! I thought about that after my post. They'd be great for the first prototype, in my backyard. My neighbor can get me three 20' pieces... he uses them for temporary roofs over foundation excavation projects on his old house.

I was thinking primarily about transporting the parts with a car... what the heck, it's a Travois! Now we need a horse...
