I'm thinking that, whatever animal it was, when you came out of your hammock, not only was it surprised, but it also didn't know what the heck you were.
Could you tell how high above the ground the eyes were? A Bobcat would not stand very tall, not as tall as a grown coyote or domestic dog.
Air horn sounds good. Pepper spray could come in very handy for all sorts of threats. Though I would never use it until I was pretty sure the attack was on. At least because the wind might get it on me or my sleep gear. But if not worried about that, it might make good training for an aggressive animal that has lost it's fear of humans.
But if dealing with rabies, avoid getting bit!
