    self made materials

I know it's recommended to make your hammock out of ripstop material,I'm just wondering if anyone had tried or made one from from common material, like polyester/cotton blend,or straight cotton. If u have, what kinda success didu have with it,and life of the product.

Indoors you can use anything your heart desires. It should be at least 60" wide if you want a comfortable hammock. Anything wider than that will probably have to be pieced. Outdoors stay away from the natural materials because theyy will rot and fail without much advanced warning. Not a good thing. Nylon, polyester, ripstop, taffeta, oxford take your pick depending on weight you want the product to be and how heavy you are. I am in the 250 range hanging indoors on one layer of taffeta. No problem. Lots of commercial vendors do not use ripstop but rather use a taffeta weave. Ripstop is generally preferred by gram weenies because you can shave a few ounces off the final product. If gram weenie-dom is not your thing... don't get hung up on the fabric weight. It really is not worth the headaches, IMO.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Why is 60 inch material that much better than 48?

    Don't know 4 sure,but i heard that 48 will give u some shoulder squeeze,while 60 allows 4 a little more comfort room.

A couple of years ago I made a simple gathered end hammock out of an old sheet for my daughter to play with. As she was laying in it, I was congratulating my self on being such a genius at hammock design, and then the bottom ripped out and she fell and got hurt. (I didnt feel so smart after that!) I learned my lesson-------dont mess with the hammock body, use proven materials! Granted, the sheet I used was pretty old, but it looked fine to me---I dont trust cotton at all. Anyway thats my opinion about hammock fabric for what its worth-------good luck! (and if your using experimental materials, you might want to put somthing soft underneath!)

More room for a diagonal lie.
