This last weekend my sidekick Ninja and I took a little jaunt on the Appalachian Trail in the Roan Highlands. This was one of my favorite sections from when I thru-hiked.
The weather was perfect for gear testing (rain, wind, cold).
We headed out from ATL Friday mourning and made it to Mountain Harbour B&B in Roan Mtn, TN at 3:30. We took the $55 shuttle to Iron Mtn Gap and hiked 4 miles to Greasy Creek Gap. We didn't see a soul on the trail until we got to camp and had a thru-hiking neighbor.
Saturday we woke up to rain and hiked 18miles up and over Roan Mtn to Overmountain Shelter. Saw 6 or so hikers on the trail and probably 20-30 bedded down when we arrived at Overmountain. We were the only hammockers besides the one ENO that was setup under the shelter.
We finished off Sunday with a 8 mile hike in the clouds over the balds.
Our newly made synthetic TQ's and UQ's performed better than expected. I was thinking they'd only be good to 40, but they took us into the 30's and we both still had to remove some clothing layers. I believe it being a humid cold helped us out. We had very little condensation due to the heavy consistent wind.
Our newly made hammocks performed equally as well. The overcovers are a nice touch.
All and all a wonderfully successful weekend, and another epic trip in the books.
